Which hitch rack?

there's several threads on here but I'd fire this one up too

Thule T2 or Yakima Holdup.

I had both but I woulda preferred the Yakima but it didn't work with my pickup's fold down gate. Yakima is lighter, smaller footprint, and the hitch attachment has no play. Yakima comes with a great lock too that locks bikes and rack to the hitch. The opposite goes for the T2 but it pivoted down lower. It adjusts one position down and then it can even drop down to the floor almost removing this safety pin which is great for loading big things in the bed of my truck. Since you're shopping for a car. If you plan on keeping bike on rack when you access trunk, you may have issue with trunk gate hitting bikes. If possible, you may consider try then buying.

the 1upUSA Ultra rack is what I chose after using the Saris Themla (light but not the sturdiest) and the Saris CycleOn (very good but heavy) and seeing what others use. The unit is all billet aluminum, no plastic or steel, light as hell, folds up to be really compact (you can leave it in your trunk like I do), very minimal sway (I have zero concern that this thing is going anywhere at highway speeds), and I can literally put it on the car and mount the bike in 2 minutes.

The only thing I could see being an issue would be the price point. The 1 bike carrier is $299 (also comes in black now for an additional $50) but you can pick up a 2nd bike add on for $199 if you want (again in black for another $50). While the unit is somewhat costly in comparison to other racks on the market, short of an accident, I can't see any issues arising because the build quality is exceptional.

I've used the T2 for almost two years and it does well. Like others have mentioned it is a little heavy. I will use a cable lock if I make a pit stop. Overall easy to use and you don't have to struggle putting bikes on top of the truck. And yes, 29er friendly 🙂

love my Saris CycleOn rack, works for 20" up to 29" wheels

I second that. I have this rack and it is awesome. Saris's warranty is very good as well. I had an issue with one of the holders and a couple of days after I called, I had a new part in the mail.
