What to drink?

1 scoop of perpetuem and 1 scoop of heed per water bottle works for me. I have found that I need some protein when I'm pushing hard or I'll get cramps in the legs. I aim for 1 bottle per 1.5 hrs.

I like the espresso Perpetuem but it's awful warm. The strawberry/vanilla holds up well in the high temps though.

I think any brand can work, it's just a matter of finding the right combination and right amount that works for you.

Agreed.

I can't do protein though. No way. And when it gets warmer out, the less flavor the better. Heed is good with their "subtle" flavors. At least for me....others have their stomachs explode.

Right now I'm on a Gu kick. Their electrolyte brew is pretty solid. I may try the roctane mix next time, buts its so much pricier. Plus I'm not a huge fan of the caffeine.... Another ingredient that can wreck your stomach. Grape is caffeine free though.

Post ride.... Nothing beats an ice cold can of coke. And don't even say beer. After a long hard ride, I need some time before a beer. At least 45 minutes.

Does anyone drink monster, amp, red bull, or anything like that when they ride? I've tried it before a few rides, and it sometimes makes me feel like crap.m anyone have any info on this?

Once in a while I'll do a 8oz can of Redbull before a ride. if it's a long ride with a pitstop I'll get a RB and a small Gatorade. ....Protien drink (muscle milk) after.

I've had my stomach flip from heed and just drink fresh water during the ride. I am going to have to figure something out for when the heat really sets in.

Not a fan of drinking my calories. The most tolerable sports drink I have found is extra diluted cytomax. EFS is ok, but way high on the sodium and just too salty tasting in the summer.

When I gave up on drinking calories on longer rides, I switched the nuun and zym. I guess there is some weird chemical in nuun that some people dont like, but I find the taste to be great and it's something that works awesome at preventing cramps in the heat for me.

What I've been using this year is http://www.skratchlabs.com. Dr. Allen Lim's new company. The sweetness comes from freeze dried fruit. No artificial junk in it at all. 80 calories per scoop. The flavor is slighty salty, probably due to the higher electrolyte and lower sugar ratio. Not nearly as salty as EFS, and probably not fair even to call it salty at all really. Just "less sweet." This weekend and today were the first tests in super hot conditions and I had no discomfort, granted the longest ride was only 2 hours, but two bottles of drink mix in 90+ degree heat is enough for me to form an opinion.

I drank nuun while sitting at my desk yesterday just to try it out. I felt funky afterwards, but maybe it didn't agree with what I had just eaten. I'll try it again, who knows.

This looks promising. Whats the water/scoops per serving? The label says "1 level scoop 500ml prepared" so I'm guessing it's one scoop per ~17 oz water?

Yeah. This is a fairly personal thing and you need to experiment a bit. Buy the little packages of everything and start using stuff.

I've found going lite on harder or hotter days works well. After subscribing to the Lim nutrition plan I've started using the SkratchLabs drink and NUUN. Both are very light. I take in calories with solid food.

I think Heed works the best for me... however, I just hate its taste.

For 4:1 recovery drinks, sometimes diary-based doesn't agree with my stomach. That being said: http://vegasport.com/recover/recovery-accelerator

Since I don't typically eat breakfast..... (I know, it's bad)....
I drink it instead, http://www.myvega.com/products/vega-one-shake/features-benefits

I've also had more success in the past with water + solids. But I'll go back to what I said before, when it gets hot everything goes out the window. Hot for 2 hours is whatever. I mentioned on the ride last night that the Heed I was riding with tastes like cake: warm & sweet. I'm fine with that for 2 hours. And I mix the stuff at half strength.

After 4-5 hours cake probably gets old. And really, if I want cake I'll just stuff a goddamn piece of cake in my jersey pocket.

Also, not to sound like too much of a downer, but I think this quest is in-line with the search for the fountain of youth. I don't think the answer exists.

Carbo Rocket is my choice for endurance

So I race 24-hours. solo. So nutrition is extremely important.
I love Carbo Rocket. The stuff works amazingly well to keep me hydrated, prevents cramps, and keeps me going even when I it's difficult to eat. And it tastes good too. For 24-hour races, I also sip on a can or two of an energy drink, but I'm highly sensitive to caffeine. 1-2 cans works for me to stay awake for 24. I also used it for a couple of adventure races.

Although I don't have a good routine yet of what works, I can completely agree with this. monday I was out for 50 miles, and it was hot and a bit windy, I drank 1 bottle of powerade zero, and then 3.5-4 full bottles of water. as well as eating 2 peanut butter clif crisp bar (2 come in each pack) and 2 gu packets. I was ok for this ride, but thirsty when I finished.

heat is tough, but I'm sure a lot has to do with the fact that I'm still figuring shit out again

We don't carry SkratchLabs yet, but we will at some point. Allen gave me a butt load of samples at the Tim Johnson ride so I've been using those on "important" days. During a 40-minute commute to work I can drink piss and it wouldn't effect anything. And agree with Norm that you can do anything for 2 hours. Except the Gu tabs, they make me hurl if I go hard.

I use water and Heed as well for the 2-3 hour window. I like the slow burn. In heat I keep it light and may add a fizz tablet to a heed. It seems like heat affects us all different. I deal with it well, but staying hydrated is something that should be done all day long, the day before and after as well. I've just started replacing my second cup of morning Joe with water.

Protein drinks do not agree with my stomach. For longer rides I bring real food that contain carb, protein AND fat and eat very small portions at a time. I also never do intensity on longer rides, so this may be worthless information.

This has been my approach all along but once it goes above 75-80 this doesn't work for me, hence my search. So based on your experience it's a moving target which gets us to your next comment (and is probably somewhat related to what Pixy is saying).

So you mean to tell me I've been eating lizard turds for nothing? I thought I still looked 18....

Let us know here when you do!

I think this is a big part of my problem. I need to cut down the 16-40 oz of coffee I'm drinking each day.

I am curious about this comment as well. on the average I probably drink 20-30 oz of coffee as well, but no sugar and only skim milk.

I wonder what an effect it may be having on me

drink more water a day every day

I need my electrolyte drink, water, and whatever clif bar. I found out if I'm riding more than 3hrs I will take in anything and then some more or else I will end with leg cramps or biking hang overs an hr after my ride is over.

30oz a day may arguably be a bit much, but 20 or less shouldn't be an issue. The sugar wouldn't help if you're aiming for weight loss..but why only skim? Just a taste thing?

I feel I could pretty easily cut down to 20oz, so I guess I should do that. I guess starting tomorrow. As for the skim milk, I was just thinking that if I could lighten up the coffee a bit and still keep unneeded calories down, why not.

I was a sugary drink addict for a lot of years so I cut it out when I started working on becoming healthier, although its not my main goal, but I am losing weight, down from 227 to sub 210. riding bikes a lot helps me with that.
