What do you pack for CX races? Things that makes race days easier?

Wait, 3 kits for one day of racing? When you extracted it from your brain and wrote that in text, does it still make sense?

Sorry just saw this.

When you turn Grumpy Mode off can you also turn I Get Jokes mode on?

I have decked hard pre-riding a bunch of times but I usually start out on the fastest rolling tires and move up from there. Nothing better than getting heckled before you even start racing.

you are suppose to warm up in your street clothes, i heard its more pro/hipster?
This is nothing more then I hate doing. You only have to catch your jeans or coat one time mounting to sweat this practice off.

PLUS, kit time is training time.

i guess i do two pre-ride rides. one is just to scout, the other is in a kit actually warming up

also, if your jeans are getting caught, they arent tight enough

I have submitted a request to the mainframe, response time seems to be slow. Complaint ticket has been submitted.

Negative sir. I put the baggies on after hanging a bit in street clothes.

In an effort to improve my gear-results.com ranking, I will be going with the following moving foward:

1. Outfit to arrive/reg in.
2. Outfit to pre-ride in.
3. Outfit to cool down in.
4. Outfit to race in.
5. Choice of 2 outfits for post race / hang out / go eat in.

Holy Sh*t! This is beginning to sound like an episode of "Pimp my Gypsy Wedding" or whatever the damn show is called....🙄

Now I'm twice as glad I just spectate (stand around and drink) 😛

I usually jump on the course in my street clothes as soon as I'm at the venue. All I'm doing is scouting lines and trying to take note of potential trouble spots, especially for the first lap.

After that, I go get my number and hit the bathroom.

I pin on the number, put on the race clothes, and then warm up on the trainer, so multiple costume changes are generally unneeded.

plastic rear fender for warming up. i dont like to get muddy in my street clothes 🙂
might sound lame but I like bringing a trainer/wheel especially when its cold to warm up. i find myself hanging out talking / cheering instead of doing proper warmups sometimes.
also headphones for warm-ups to get mildly in the zone.

if its wet and/or cold ill do 2x shoes / socks as well. I dislike wet feet quite a lot.

really? i cant remember the last time i hit the ground warming up... am i doing it wrong?

It must right if Oishi is doing it also. There is no penalty for making mistakes during warmup, other than to you ego...

I travel to the venue with my bib on/skinsuit on. If it's skinsuit day I leave my arms out tied into a belt. I generally jump out of the car, grab my bike shoes and helmet, shed my shorts or jeans, hit the bathroom then hit the course.

I hate changing, I keep it to a minimum.

Definitely a fan of a second pair of SPD shoes for pre-riding on the wet days. Racing the cyclocross is miserable enough, it's best to keep discomfort to a minimum. Like Lt. Dan says (modified for the cyclcross) "There is one item of kit gear that can be the difference between a live grunt and a dead grunt. Socks, merino wool, colored. Try and keep your feet dry when we're out preriding. I want you boys to remember to change your socks whenever we stop."

Since we started with footwear...

As far as socks go- I have some wool CK socks I fancy above 60, below 60 I reach for my Endura Baabaa winter wool sock. They are a bit thicker on the sole which really helps. Also, new as of last year, below ~55 I tape my shoe vents shut. I have some specialized mountain shoes, they aren't as open as some so I can close em up pretty easy. 2 layers of duct tape, preferably patterned.

Below ~45-50 I get some chemical toe warmers in. My feet get cold easily, I hate cold club feet.

Might as well talk about gloves...

Above 60-65+: short fingered

45-60: Pearl Izumi long finger 'thermal lights'

Sub 45 or 50 and windy: Pearl Izumi long finger with chemical toe warmers. The adhesive keeps them in your glove.

I've used my heavy duty pearl izumi winter gloves racing but I dont like the feedback I loose from the bars. I end up with much less modulation and control. I use them preriding but switch to thin gloves racing. The thins+warmers have worked with very positive results to about 30F.

+1 for extra cleats. i have broken or lost bolts at races more than once.
  • Extra safety pins. (This addresses a phobia more so than a reality.)
  • Thermos of Coffee- always be drinking coffee.
  • Opaque mug in case of adult beverage - nj is silly about public display of alcohol.

I forgot a major item for Nittany... A towel. The showers are one of the best things about racing at Nittany. I had sloppy seconds with @Chris26er towel.

Those track guys must hate us cx dudes. That shower was a muddy mess, maybe as bad as Lewis Morris. I guess you should also remember to bring flip flops for the shower, as if you didn't already become infected with staph from the mud pit.

For the first time I discovered the loop across the street, which was perfect for warming up. I am not sure why I never saw it before.

That loop is so dope

Anyone have any thoughts of Breathe Right Strips?

They are nerdy as hell but I end up scrunching my face and flaring my nostrils the entire race which is one more thing to think about.

Do you actually breath through your nose during a race?

I would imagine I would look something like this:
