Depends where you ride. I took my hardtail to the Hartshorne ride and it was way better than if i took my FS there. I heart hardtails for the right situations.

I have this jamis dragon 1 sitting in my garage size small it is a single speed frame but can be set upgeared with right stuff to make it geared $50 if you want it has a chris king headset
I think it's a good starting point at the right price I'm sure a good shop could get you the parts to make it geared 2009 frame I believe very little use I bought it for the king hubs that came with it
