Unbound—-has it become the biggest one day race in the world?

Ha. I love nelson but he does always have list of what went wrong after haha.

IDK, I'm actually shocked. He showed up to my house with aero bars that he's never ridden, borrowed a pile of stuff he's never seen, and took someone's place at the last minute and beat people who trained for over a year specifically for this event. It's kinda remarkable. Although the guy he beat borrowed my other stuff and I made sure he got the crappier stuff 🤣

LOL. No, Nelson is a beast. I really thought he would blow up and not finish though but his write up was great.

i had a great time in emporia for unbound! sadly the trip was too short so we didn’t really get a chance to take in everything. we pulled into town friday lunch time and had a really small window to check in, drop off drop bags, eat, set up the bikes for sat, etc etc….

regardless, we had a blast!

the weather was perfect, the roads (er trails?) were incredible, the town and the support crews were amazing.

yep, at times it was a total cluster trying to plow the rough traffic that was worse than I-70…but after around mile 40 things really started to spread out and there were times when we could go long stretches without seeing another person

i did the ride with 3 other local buddies and we all had our own challenges and stories to tell. three of us finished around 16 hours and our fourth just barely made the cutoff at around 19+hours

my bike setup was, i think, nearly optimized for a 54 year old weekend warrior - my converted 2012 trek xcal hard tail - aka frankengravel. super comfy with the surly moloko bars, cane creek eesilk stem and maxxis rambler silk shield 50 up front, vittoria terreno dry 47 rear…

my only bike related hiccup was my sram axs GX derailleur bonked around mile 100 after eating through 3 batteries…

all in all we are planning on going back next year - i think!

here’s a few pics, a link to my strava ride and a link to my buddy art’s youtube vids of the first 150 miles or so (fair warning they are long and sometimes super boring!)

oh, one more minor nit about the event...it was pretty lousy of the lifetime folks/unbound folks to be breaking down the finish line BEFORE the cut off time for finishers. there were people rolling in (including our pal art) at after 2am (before the 3am cut off) and they were taking down the finish line, pulling up the timing mats, etc etc.

i realize those folks want to go home and all, but the people finishing at that time deserve the same finish experience as the pros and everyone else

i've heard that at ironman events, the finish line is packed for the last finisher, including the pros who have been done for 6-10 hours already. that would have been cool to see but alas...

It’s good that Keegan didn’t win IMO. The dude hasn’t lost a LTGP race in a while. We need some new faces on the top step.

It would be amazing to see more World Tour racers come and do these races. The LTGP is a pretty cool series that really tries to focus on what’s popular. I can see it would appeal to a larger WT crowd.
in one of his instagram posts, keegan said he was being marked all day long, and everyone was also looking for him to answer every attack. that's what happens when you are the top dog. and yeah, i agree...very cool to see things shook up - it's like F1 with verstappen. good to see things a little more competitive up top.

also - the women's finish was INCREDIBLE...and 8 person sprint after 200 miles is insane

Can confirm the finish area atmosphere of Ironman 140.6 events. Though he retired, it was awesome listening to the voice of Ironman, Mike Reilly, call out everyone by name as they crossed the finish line.

impressive! well done! and on a rigid hardtail with single speed the last 100 miles. ouch.

I understand the reasons behind that lever position, but it hurts my eyes.

Interesting to see the movement back to narrower bars, too. Obviously for the same reason as inward-canted levers.
