Ticks

As another little fyi, ticks only need to be attached 15 minutes to transmit Powassan virus. It is widespread in NJ, NY, and PA at this point. There is no cure and no remedies, unlike Lyme. For me, I have been tired ever since the day after the tick bite. Eyes are highly photophobic and I am unable to go to the eye doctor any longer because their light permanently harms my vision (Was previously 20/10, now 20/30). There is a disconnect between my brain, mind, vision which leaves me in a bit of a fog all the time. And also some slurred speech since my head cannot think as fast as my mouth moves. So yeah, fuk ticks. Fuk mice. If you see either, kill them. You don't realize how serious this is until you cannot function normally and every day is a battle to get through.

Kill ticks and mice. Spray clothes with Permethrin and everything else with DEET. Stay on trails and out of leaf litter. Leave pets at home and only walk them on the road. Literally check yourself if you've been anywhere outside.
Only about 75 cases were reported in the U.S. over the last 10 years.

I bought Permethrin and am planning to use it for the first time this season. Any experience with it? Is soaking better than spraying? Do you only spray/soak socks to keep bugs crawling up the legs or do you also apply to shorts/shirt? Any other advice that I might not otherwise read in the instructions?

Did I say I hate chiggers? Because I do. Very much.

Spray on everything, let sit for an hour or two. Reapply every 5-6 washes. That may be what the instructions say, but I never read them.

I spray my shoes, socks, shorts/pants/jerseys. I'll spray any of those that I may possibly use outside.

For the shoes/socks I'll do a mist layer on them, but I'll also put my bottle on "stream" mode and more or less paint a line at the opening. Theory in least being that the Tick may be able to walk across the cloth with minor Permethrin, but there's a strong line it has to cross to get to my skin.

So a good line at the bottom of my shorts, top of the socks, near the opening of the shoe, etc.

I also sprayed my race-day bag that may end up on the ground. I should spray my car interior now that I think about it...

please be careful with Permethrin if you have pets. it is toxic to cats.

High doses of Permethrin are a neurotoxin to felines, seizures/death common as would happen if dosed with, say, canine tick/flea repellent. That's ~40% concentration, IIRC, and is more than enough to kill without prompt treatment. NB, family cat got dosed with dog frontline by accident, as they were all lined up to get done. It survived (not great prospects, btw) with some lingering 'minor' neurological damage (balance issues). The bill was not cheap--7 days of intensive care boarding and associated tests/medications/fluid packs.

Once dry on clothes, it is okay...as long as they aren't sleeping in them. The primary issue is if the liquid soaks into the skin/fur.

The liquid form is questionable for humans, too, but still far safer (and better than contracting tick-borne diseases) than it is for cats. Once dry, toxicity for humans is negligible. The chemical works by paralyzing insects...but it is not instant, so you still should spray up with repellent.

The other day I pulled a tiny one off my cheek (on my face you freaks) and today I pulled this fucker off my sack. And I don’t mean nap sack. 😳

I picked one off... umm... "the end"... many years ago. Not a fun experience.
I've been lucky so far this year... despite the amount of time I've spent in the woods so far.
