This Thread Blows - C19 and beyond

So you have to wear a mask where there is virtually no chance of getting infected but you can still get packed into a bar and drink the night away without masks? That'll work!
Masks inside at all times except eating. We eat outdoors. Breakfast inside with three 3 other people in the whole place

Good lord were you drunk when you wrote that question? What does Japan have to do with FL??

PS NJ is about to reach a very ignominious milestone re: deaths/1 million population.

What does NJ have to do with Florida?

OK, @SLIKRICK.

Let’s assume that for practical purposes there were in substance no vaccines available before December 31, 2020. None in Florida (population 21.5mm according to the World Bank) and none in Japan (population 126.3mm---who gnu?) Meanwhile the C19 virus has been churning away for a full year.

The dead body count at 12/31/20 was 21,673 in Florida per Worldometers and 3,414 in Japan. If

“Vaccination is the only thing that really makes a difference”

then how come the kill rate per million is 37 times higher in Florida than Japan? Could it be that masking, testing, quarantining and other tactics mitigate the death rate? Is it possible that suppressing the virus gives scientists time to develop more effective treatments including vaccines?

Or is tRUMP clone DeSantis just the world's best leader? I am assuming that if rick can hack on Murphy (see 100 examples in this thread above,) then we can discuss leadership as a factor.

That book "Nightmare Scenario," which I posted above is quite informative. I mean, if you read books...

So Florida is a dumpster fire? Is that actually news?

Several studies have shown that maximum life span/quality of life & the flu shot are actually fairly positively correlated. The resistance to the flu shot sounds exactly like the resistance to the Covid vaccine. It literally sounds exactly the same to my ears. I have a coworker who pretty much reasons the same exact way for not getting the Covid vaccine.

And I’ll say it. Stick the religious excuse up your corn hole. It’s bullshit.

I had this typed out yesterday, only less eloquently.
Basically, if you use this excuse, then you have no right to show up at any doctor/hospital/clinic ever..... just die at home, and own it.

Harsh? Yes. But it's an active binary decision. You either get medical treatment, or let whatever god you think there is sort it out.

The flu is just the flu, except it still kills between 20-80k people a year and about 1M hospitalizations just in the US. It’s also caused pandemics that have killed more people than COVID in the past. Rate per year would probably be way less if the fools who think they’re impervious to it actually get the shot every year. I’ve only had it a couple of times in my life, but man did it kick my ass each time.

I don't understand why people keep bringing this up. I haven't gotten a flu shot in like 20 years. I scheduled the covid shot the day I was allowed to.

i mean i dont generally get the flu shot either and i also scheduled my covid shot the day i was eligible.

as a note, my lack of getting the flu shot has always been a convenience thing, i remember it being a wait and a time sink growing up, but at that age the parental units didnt give much choice. As such i never made an effort to go out of my way to get it. My wife insisted on stopping to get it last year, and it was surprisingly quick simple. I probably still wont go out of my way to get it but if Im at a place that offers it and theres no line . . . . why the hell not.

I had also typed out something along the same lines and decided not to hit post for some reason, medical restrictions are one thing, but religious reasons are BS for not getting it.

..being married so someone who works in an ER...I can tell you that the vast majority of her patients in the winter are from flu and they almost always have gotten the flu shot.....Fact remains that while yes...I would agree...we should all get the flu shot...its on average 40% effective. Which im sure you know already

Second @Norm s thought on religious objections....Ask my wife about this sometime...When she has parents in the ER with kids sick with fucking whooping cough...what? really? but thats been gone forever and ever....Actually, no its still out there......or "insert name of other thing your grandparents had but is gone now....or so you thought" Religious objections my ass....You know when your bring your child to the peds ER with bruises, or other signs of neglect...you WILL have DYFS looking at you.....but BC god, alla, jesus, the fonz, david koresh said not vaccinate your kid....thats ok? bullshit in my opinion.

More anecdotal "evidence:"

A friend and teammate of mine, Chuckles, now lives in retirement in Brooksville, FLA. He didn't get vaccinated, got C19 on July 4th and was in bed for three weeks. Yesterday, when I spoke to him a month after infection, he still hasn't resumed his normal low impact workouts. Glad he is recovering---one of the nicest guys in the world. He is more than a bit of a flake, so I am curious about why no vax, but will follow up when appropriate.

His next door neighbor was not so fortunate. She didn't get vaxxed and died. Contributory factor may have been the 100 lbs more than Chuckles she weighed. Her last words to Chuckles were for him to take care of her pet pig, Pork Chop. However, a month later, Pork Chop got a disease, which was untreatable. Excavator dug a hole, Pork Chop was led into it and got AR-15'd.

I'll be honest, across all of the stories about C19, the one that really got to me was the pet pig.
