Unfortunately it's the highest widely available coin denomination, probably not that effective as a deterrent. It could be worked out though, i.e. get a token for a $2 deposit at the door, use the token to release the shopping cart from storage, use the cart, return the cart to storage to release the token, use the token to collect the #2 deposit...could be a business idea? too complicated? Buy a $2 token that can be reused indefinitely, avoid stopping at the door to get the token...

Not any weirder than how Aldi/Lidl conduct their business in this country (pre COVID, anyway), already.

Not sure it's as much as a deterrent as it lays out what you SHOULD do. Even if it's just a quarter, by putting in a quarter when taking out the cart it's clear that you're supposed to return the cart to the front of the store.

I haven't seen a single cart left in the lot in the nearby Aldi.

Are you saying that people that leave the shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot are not aware they should bring it back to the corral? Maybe, but then a sign saying 'return shopping carts to the corral when no longer in use' should suffice. Very sad indeed. In my opinion we've got to be so lazy that if there is no difference between doing the right thing Vs doing the wrong one, we'll always choose the one that takes the least effort, hence the shopping cart stays in the parking lot. The store hand will pick it up eventually...

Funny story, back in the early 2000s I lived in Florida. I worked with a 300+ lbs machinist , a born again christian who claimed Jesus told him to change his ways and be a better person...this included to stop dropping the shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot but apparently not to stop cloning christian rock CDs...
 
I apparently grew up in a crappy area (?). I remember the local A&P had quarter carts (they might have been 0.50, actually). Carts were never not where they were supposed to be, as far as we saw...

That said, you would think that working in retail would fix it, but my mother was the worst with returning her cart.
 
But how many people, upon arriving at the grocery store, will take that cart in the middle of the parking lot to use for shopping?

I disagree. This would be one of my first missions if I were in a political office... Put the carts back or else.
I would also move to standardize card payment methods at all retailers...

Just some of my peeves
 
I've left my cart out there at times. Typically on a curb or something so it doesn't get blown into another car. But it's only happened when I want to get my kids buckled into their carseats before loading the groceries into the car so that they don't run out into the street while I'm busy loading the car. Then I don't feel comfortable bringing the cart back where I'll barely be able to see the car with my kids in it. If it's close, I'll bring it back. But they're a little older now and easier to deal with, so I haven't left a cart in the lot in quite a while. Sorry to be such a scumbag 🤣
 
The issue isn't not bring the carts back, it's leaving them where they slam into other cars. As shown in the picture that was posted starting this whole thing.

I have a reminder of my plastic grill on my car missing a chunk of plastic from someone just leaving their cart next to their car and it rolling into my car. At least just do the slightest amount of effort to put it in the nearby corral, or up on a curb, etc.

But I don't get upset mostly with the damage because when I was a teenager we'd drive as fast as we could while holding a cart with our arm out the window and watch it hit a curb at 20mph and go flying. Karma.

Wow this little pet peeve annoyance really took off !

That being said if you’re not gonna bring it back to the corral don’t blatantly leave it like what I showed where it’s in the way and will hit other people’s cars. That was really my main point.
