Thermal tight recommendations?

Hey Gang

I'm looking to get some winter tights preferably with a chamois liner.

Any recommendations? I see Pearl Izumi has some. I would love to find a cheaper pair if possible.

gracias

I have the Pearl AmFib tights w/o chamois. I think they were just under $100 and they are the bomb. I wear my regular cycling shorts under them for the chamois .. You can save a bit of money that way.

I picked up a set of thermafleece tights/pants w/o the chami. I think they are Pearl Izumi... I def. prefer the pants w/o chami. I think it let's you buy a warmer/better set of pants since your not paying for the chami. I wear my PI chami under my pants and am warm and comfy all winter!

You put the tights under or over the tights?

shorts under the tights. you wanted the chamios right next to you skin. When you see people that look like they are wearing tights underneth, they are likely wearing knee or leg warmers.

Get a pair of tights without a chamios. Get a mid-weight pair as getting a pair of the am-fibs would be over kill for anything above 32 degrees, road or mountain, unless it is raining. Performance mankes some inexpensive ones that will do the job.

+1
I have a pair of PI tights that let's me ride in the woods down to about 25F. If it's below 35F I wear a pair of lightweight snowboard socks with my shoes.

how cold are you going to ride in? i picked up a pair of under armor heat gear tights last year and they're good down into the mid/upper 30s. colder than that and i have a pair of specialized thermal tights that i wear which work well.

Performance Tights

What do you folks think about these. They're pretty cheap at about $45 (they are having a sale). I would like to ride until the temp get a bit above freezing. I asked about how effective they are but the person couldn't give me any info.

I don't currently own short tights with chami. I bike in the baggies w/chami. The shorts would be an extra expense. Would you still recommend getting shorts w/chami and the non-chami thermal tights or something like I listed above.

thanks

Agree with the above comments on the Amfib's. They're great as long as it's below freezing, otherwise they tend to feel too warm.

i'd recommend some lyrca w/sham. i wear baggies over the lycra when i feel like making a fashion statement.

If you wear baggies, get the tights with the chamios so you can avoid the extra cost. The tights you had the link for will do you fine.

yep, agree with kev...but below freezing is when the riding up here REALLY starts to get good.

Found my cut-off to be 28F. Anything under that I can't keep my toes warm.

Shorts all year long as well, keeps you moving - would wear tights but can't find them in mens sizes...har har har

yeah, the tights thing. it took me awhile to get past that one too. but if you really like to ride, then you need to do so year round. i tried a pair of sport hill pants like these first http://www.sporthill.com/product.php?TypeID=2930&gender=m which were fine and are really just less tight tights. once i used to them (and they got too big) it was easy to make the jump to full-on tights. i'll still ride in the woods with baggies over my tights but for the most part...well...it's just the tights.

Don't get me wrong I ride all year in shorts and doesn't bother me as long as I keep moving. Flanel boxers help.

What I found is frozen toes to be limiting factor. Anything less than 28F and can't keep the feet warm.

Tried heated socks, baggies, plastic bags even hand warmers (which worked but were ridiculously uncomfortable)

I have toe problems as well. They have toe warmers that fit a lot better in the shoes. I carry a couple in my pocket cause they don't last as long as advertised.
