7/1
As usual when I have a specific ride in mind, I end up hitting dismiss instead of snooze on my alarm and woke back up at 5 (my alarm is set for 4:15 and I usually actually get up at 4:30-4:40). Meh. I race to get ready since I planned for the 1 hour TM and 1 hour ride today to obtain the mulligan. I am going for the 20+ cat so the mulligan is simply to bump my numbers there. Anyways, make it to start my ride at 5:26.
I have largely been ignoring Baldpate this year, since I have been focusing my TM efforts at Nesh. I did maybe 4 hours of trimming in June and even though I trimmed probably a mile of trail, it is just a drop in the bucket but I did address a really bad area. When I rode there earlier this week, some trimming is badly needed. I decided to focus on the main climb in / downhill out on the east side. As you can see from the pics below, when I trim, I trim heavy because these prickers grow like weeds. In general I am trimming back 1'-2' from the edge of the tread. Also note that there are very little trimmings left in the trail and I did not rake this. I have a pet peeve when people take the time to trim and then leave stuff in the trail. All in all, I cut back about 0.2 mile of trail on both sides today and addressed three "chutes" that were bad. During my ride, I put in a rip on the DH and it felt good to not be ripped up on the way down. Still have one more session to completely clear the full downhill (1 mile), since I already did the top half two weeks ago.
While I was trimming the area in the pics, I saw the old man I see almost every day I ride there in the summer months. I have a theory that he is a ghost as I have never seen him anywhere but the same 1/2-3/4 mile of trail and I have only ever seen him climbing the trail. Sure, timing wise this doesn't sound like much of a mystery. Anyways, I always say good morning but I am typically descending when I see him. This is the first time I said more than "good morning" and he said thanks for the trimming. I still think he may be a ghost.

This doesnt look that bad, but at 20 mph, your bars are rubbing stuff. I cleaned up the hangers the other day before this heavy trim.
I also go for the main vine, when possible. Clipping hangers is great, but clipping the branch they are attached to (the horizontal arm in the upper right) eliminates multiple hangers. Better yet, clipping the main vine eliminates branches, which equals less trimming in the future, One thing to know is that new branches will grow where you cut them off, so cutting it close to the ground is preferred. In this case, the base of this main vine was 5' off the trail and I could not get to it, so I cut as low as I can.
