The DIY thread - DIYourself

Asked two plumbers and both said they couldn't, but then again what do I know. American Water came yesterday to shut off the main and this morning got the second estimate, $500 and no need to dig. "you've got the job". A few hours later we have water. Much easier than trial and error.

Also got him to put in the front spiquot which I hadn't figured out how to extend the run. Worth the two Benjamins. Not DIY, but happy with the second opinion

Did he demo out the block ?

Looks like he was able to get the pro press on whatever was left on the backside of the valve. Was hard to tell from the photo. Glad to see you're back up and running.

yeah, I think that's what he called it, when did they start using them? first time I've seen

Pretty much every gate valve in my house leaks at the stem. I need to re-pack them, not looking forward to it.

Edit: doesn't seem to be a big deal to replace the packing washer, still other things I'd rather do....

Do you have a power tool battery that is dead and won't charge? I did,
a Dewalt drill. I googled for a replacement battery and found this fix.
Maybe it will work for you, it worked for me and brought my battery back to life.

Wonder if it works for other makes, will try

my ztr was down all last year and I've been holding on to it to fix up, push mowed all last season, so that's gotta change
The last engine blew after what I suspect was a cracked cam shaft. Last year, I bought a new engine and installed it, and after engaging the blade, heard a metal rubbing sound and it stopped. It sat all summer in the garage afterwards. With some help, I've diagnosed it to be the clutch. I don't think I torqued it properly when putting in the engine and the clutch likely tore itself up. Anyway, just ordered a new clutch from OX and ready to try again. Engine had some trouble starting up as well, so will check the carb. I'm horrible with anything engine related. It this fails, I'm going to just get a new mower. Too much time wasted.

This guy looks like a reliable source for a new mower. There's about 5x the amount of stuff there now.

Mower maintenance time.

Changed oil and filter. Air filter, and hit the business area with the leaf blower.

Had a wheel bearing go at the end of last year. Let it sit over the winter, and
looked up the part a couple weeks ago - ordered it up. It was way too big - 1" axle.
Bad job by me not measuring. Grab my vernier caliper, and find it is a standard 1-3/8x3/4 - piece of pie.
HD has them in the "don't buy me" quality range, so i grab some from the bearing guy on ebay. Figured
i'd do both wheels.

old and new.

Popped out the old ones with a punch, drove the new ones with a large impact rated socket -

Go to do the second wheel, and immediately notice i need a different set of sockets. FML - the axles and everything on
one side of the mower is smaller than the other. smaller one is 1-3/8x1/2 - who does this? guess i have an extra set now.

They will have to wait a bit more before being replaced.

also reset level for the deck - it was off by quite a bit, and scalping one side.

True, and it sounds like I will get even more out of it, fire is on hold for the time being. Sorry!

The mechanic says the noise is gone and only found a damaged bushing in one of the front control arm. He went through the repairs I've done myself (I left a box with all the parts replaced for him to check) and found everything buttoned up as it should.

He doesn't want to do a vacuum flush of the cooling system because he didn't hear any gurgling sound coming from the dashboard (typical) so I guess is going to be my next project...

Ok, the car needed to switch winter tires out, so I decided to ask the shop to check the noise, as they also do complete car care.

Once my car was ready, the service manager informed me that it was just an exhaust leak but it was so small they could not find it, only thing to do is waiting for it to get bigger and be more obvious. Enter sigh of relief. So I asked "is it on the left bank or the right one?". Service manager's answer was "You have a four cylinder!"...I guess the search was so accurate that they didn't even bother to look at the right (rear) bank, nor under the heat shield of the left bank or they would have noticed the 3 exhaust ports. Free check I guess, can't ask much.

Anyway, I have been thinking about being an exhaust leak after excluding everything else so waiting to get worse, then I've got my next DIY project cut out for me.

Have you ever changed the bearings on the blade pulleys. Mine have some play. Not priority at the moment but good to know anyways

not yet! but it is coming - i have a blade that is doing something weird - deck is level, but i'm getting some occasional scalping, so one of the blade shaft bearings must be going.
