Sounds like you got your money's worth from it. $20 and fire time!

True, and it sounds like I will get even more out of it, fire is on hold for the time being. Sorry!

The mechanic says the noise is gone and only found a damaged bushing in one of the front control arm. He went through the repairs I've done myself (I left a box with all the parts replaced for him to check) and found everything buttoned up as it should.

He doesn't want to do a vacuum flush of the cooling system because he didn't hear any gurgling sound coming from the dashboard (typical) so I guess is going to be my next project...

Leaving the house this morning, i heard the second stage heat system running (see previous post)
I thought that was kinda weird, but didn't put too much thought into it. got home an hour later and it was still going,
and not blowing warm air. Could only mean 1 thing.

the biennial replacement of the thermocouple for the pilot light. I keep 1 or 2 on hand now. About a 15 minute job,
including finding the pliers. Done.

Plumbing advice
Having some work done and the contractors needed to turn off the water and now after bringing in a plumber seems that the valve is broken inside which is okay but they are telling me it's too close to the wall and they need to dig from the outside to get enough room. Does this sound right? Waiting for the rediculous quote

Yes that is correct , that was prolly someone who shouldn't be doing the work install that valve , make sure it's a ball valve that is installed next .

Do you have the NJAW plumbing protection?

Not deep, maybe 2 feet

Any easier knocking a hole in the block around the line, resweat copper, sleeving it and repairing the block? Don't knock the far side of block out.

Having a second opinion coming today and my thoughts exactly. One day without water is already rather inconvenient, I couldn't imagine what big Sean and family had to go through this past winter. Carrying water from my neighbors was a pita. Which reminds me of that book my kids had to read in Elementary School about girls in Africa who had to walk for hours everyday to get water for their families and therefore couldn't go to school. Again my silly first world problems put into perspective

i'll bring my torch and a rock hammer up. two hours -

why not replace the guts of the valve?

i'll assume you have city water, they will need to turn it off at the street to work on it, so just turn it off at the street.
put new valve in down-stream of old valve.

does the valve work at all?

this is exactly what id do. but then im no expert.

So, I have a lot of lumber still leftover from the renovation. This is the first project so far with said scrap lumber... a planter, with elevated bottom to reduce weight when filled with dirt..it’ll eventually rot but I’ll be long gone by then lol. Anyone have ideas for scrap 2x10’s??

Asked two plumbers and both said they couldn't, but then again what do I know. American Water came yesterday to shut off the main and this morning got the second estimate, $500 and no need to dig. "you've got the job". A few hours later we have water. Much easier than trial and error.

Also got him to put in the front spiquot which I hadn't figured out how to extend the run. Worth the two Benjamins. Not DIY, but happy with the second opinion
