The DIY thread - DIYourself

If you want to spend some coin, Zook Kitchens - I think he is in Readington on Pleasant Run Rd.
Has a showroom in his barn - and you can come see my kitchen.
He still pulls out a ruler and draws his drawers. 😀
He will supply whatever skilled labor you need, or work with you.
What about baths? It's really more about sprucing it up a bit and readying to sell in a few years. Need ideas on what to do with a bidet and would to expand the shower

He'll do it while doing the kitchen. He doesn't do baths without a kitchen project.

We have a master bath stuck in the early 90s, full wall vanity mirror, 72" Formica top, Jacuzzi tub and a likely never used bidet. I'd like to do the work myself and the changes are to help with resale not necessarily personal taste/preferences, which is why I'm inquiring here to gain general opinions and not biased on what we want.

I don't think there's question on removing the bidet, replacing mirror and vanity. Two items I've been discussing with MrsQ is the tub and shower. I'd like to remove the Jacuzzi tub for a smaller soaker tub and expand the shower to a doorless design. The changes are not dependent on each so I can still expand the shower without removing the Jacuzzi tub. So my question is how much of a seller are soaker tubs. Would have that vs a Jacuzzi tub make it a significant difference for homebuyers?

While not my cup of tea, having some sort of tub is an attraction - even if they don't know that they'll use it twice, and never again.

The bidet seat on a regular WC is gaining. Make sure there is an outlet near the WC if redoing.

Do we have real estate pros on here?

I switched the title back to DIYourself.
otherwise the title does not have a searchable term using the built-in search.
DIY is too short, yourself is too common.
lol I switched it to “DI Yourself” because it never comes up when I search. For whatever reason it doesn’t pick up substrings unless they are broken by a space. Meaning, searching titles for “yourself” will return “DI Yourself” but not “DIYourself”

2-funny - When did you do this? I typed in yourself and check titles, I get nothing returned.
I'm going to see if it is regenerating the search keys. then will try again.
put in Yourself as a general search term, and too many get returned - so it quits.

Will revisit in a couple days.
The search problem was the reason I expanded yourself back when it was just The DIY Thread!!!!

when I need to get it right, I google

site:mtbnj.com DIY

Only a matter of time before that doesn't work anymore, either. Boolean phrases haven't worked for...at least 10 years?

Advanced search is a joke. You used to be able to parse all of it in the search bar in one go.

The built in forum search is intentionally poor because there are upgrades for sale.
Also heard that it can be replaced with Google using just configuration.
I'll see what the admin can do about this.😉

What was the fix? I have one that’s completely broken, don’t really want to pony up for a replacement because it’s way more $$ than it should be.
For my grills, I've always used non matching aftermarket but wouldn't fly for a stove. My old cooktops were Thermadors which broke knobs almost every year. The current pedestrian Kitchenaid has been good so far. Also are less than half for replacements.

I ferruled the stem where the half-moon piece of spring steel sits. You would need something like 99% of the original material to do just that.

I considered using epoxy, but since they are weakening/cracking from (presumably) heat, I used brass to hold everything together.

When I measured them for their fitting, I noted that the stems were pretty egg-shaped (like, .5mm deviation major/minor). The brass snugged them up significantly for their fit on the range. Before, they pretty much slid right off.

You would need a lathe to make these, or you'd have to get stupid lucky to find tube stock that was the right ID for a press-fit.

@qclabrat these are from a kitchenaid, which was one of the few in stock/available when we needed a stove during covid. The plates around the knobs are stuck on instead of screwed, and they started falling off after about 1.5 years, but mother-in-law is a sledgehammer type cleaner rather than flyswatter. I also regularly used the oven at 500-550 for 2 years, which probably didn't help. The knobs made it 5-ish years before they started getting wiggly, and the first one failed entirely a couple of weeks ago.

Ordered new quill and pulley bearings for the drill press I bought. While that was going on, I cleaned all the business parts, and made a proper set of depth-stop nuts, since the orginals were long [presumably] lost. The press was obviously repainted--well, surprisingly--at some point, since it's 1) the wrong color, and 2) the ultrasonic cleaner literally flaked the paint off the return spring cover/depth stop holder. They got a coat of acid-etch and black enamel. Later on, the whole press might get re-done, but I don't really feel like hanging a 50 pound casting to spray paint it.

I also filled in the newbie marks on the work table, just to get the surface flat(ish) again.
