The dispassionate iPad thread

I played with an iPad today. Our company bought it as we're going to be writing apps for a few of our customers.

Not a fan boy of apple, but not a hater either.

On the look and feel, this thing looks really good. It feels a bit heavier than expected. The screen is pretty awesome. Way better for reading than something like the Kindle.

If you’re mainly a Web surfer, note-taker and emailer, and a consumer of photos, videos, books, mags and music—this works fine. If you want to do heavier stuff, it's not the right tool.

It doesn't support Java, like the iPhone no multitasking, and it's keyboard is a bit weird, but you can type with two hands using your thumbs, if your thumbs are not tiny. Also, its a wifi version only, not 3G which is coming.

There will be 150,000 apps for this.

I know there are a lot of doubters about the utility of this thing, but for me, despite the shortcomings, as soon as they get the 3G version and the price goes down, I may be buying one. I just don't like the $30/month fee.

It's gonna be hard to text while driving with this thing though 🙄

I resigned myself to buying one about a week ago. It may take a good 1-2 years, but I'm pretty sure we'll have a few of these in the house before too long.

Appreciate the feedback. Initial reports of the thing seem to be way above what many people (including myself) anticipated it could be.

Is it true that it slides around on the table when you navigate with your fingers? Kind of makes sense since its so smooth, sleek and shiny. I guess little rubber feet would have ruined the aesthetics.🙄

I'm still a little clueless what function this serves. Isn't it just a giant iphone?

In the latest Time magazine it states "Apple doesn't ask people what they want, it tells people what they want" 🙄

Its what e readers should have been to begin with. Add web browsing and apps and the apple marketing machine..... this thing can't miss. Ill never buy one, but half a million others already have.
FTR - I have done a complete 180 in my feelings toward this

I'll wait til the guinea pigs are done complainin about it... 2nd or third generation... get one on the cheapy cheap and worth every penny. definitely looks cool.

i am still unsure what to do about one of these. i dont really read. so i wouldnt use the ereader part. But i am a "gadget whore"

I could also think of a few things i'd like to invest using the 500 bucks in to MTB'ing instead 🙂

Nice , its like a big Iphone with out the phone...
Nice for what it is built for....😀

Yes. Apple makes solutions to problems that people don't know they have. That may be the definition of successful marketing. 😉

I didn't think I needed an iPhone. Now I can't live without it.

I'll preface this by stating I'm a bit of an apple hater, but I really don't see any use for the Ipad. Especially if you already own an iphone/android phone/somehting similar. You could even get a netbook that is way more capable for a fraction of the price. I read a critique of the ipad that when paraphrased essentially said "if you have ever looked at your phone and wished it didn't make phone calls, and didn't fit and didn't fit in your pocket, then glanced over at your netbook and said 'hey, this thing would be awesome if it didn't have a keyboard', then the ipad would be perfect for you".

(Disclaimer: I find no use for anything Apple)

Can you place Skype video calls on this? If so, I would even think of getting one.

For now, I still read actual books so I have no other use for it. For home use, I have a desktop that is always on. For lightweight travel reference needs, I use my Blackberry which has 3G, wifi and GPS and is synched with my office calendar, contacts, etc. For heavier travel computing, nothing less than a laptop will suffice.

To be honest, it seems kind of a waste to have to carry both the ipad and iphone since the latter does not make cell calls...

Are you nuts? I it had flash you could use hulu and game sites and not pay for crap through the istore

i'm still not sure on this thing. i certainly think it's cool and can probably guess 90% of its functionality as an iPhone user.

but kush, you nailed it for sure. the definition of modern marketing with certainly be (if it isn't already) making solutions to problems that people don't know they have. that's actually brilliant.

all that said, i'll probably buy one. wtf, why not? i must have new blingy things.

edit: and what luke said on flash..

Our CEO got one and I played with it today. He claims Kindle is better for reading in bright light (outdoors).
Personally I'm not impressed...it's just a toy. For the money you pay I would rather get 10" Asus Netbook or something like that. I like options and this device has none...but hey, I'm PC guy😉

I used iphone for whole year and i liked web browsing. What i didn't like:

Phone calls sucked...

Battery life bad...

Why on earth you can't mark emails as read???

Not a business tool...happily switched to BB Bold🙂
