The BearScat 50!!!!!!!

Wet!

We did a full lap yesterday. The Pumphouse bypass we were supposed to finish tommorow is submerged, but we'll be out pruning the course and cutting out some downed trees in the morning.
Jim's Bridge is underwater as well, Cabin is a nasty mudslog up to the gasline, and there are deep puddles and standing water in places I've seen water collect before. I'd wait a few days before riding the course.
That said, even though we all know how challenging Wayway is, when you string everthing on this course together, it's truly epic. I did the endurance race at French Creek in PA 2 weeks ago: 56 miles, 6.5 hours, almost 8k' of climbing and lots of rocks...it was not easy, but Bearscat is gonna make it seem like a cakewalk.
As of now, the cutoff time for lap 1 is 4 hours...not everyone is gonna make it.

Its going to hurt. Waway's fire roads are more tech than half the parks in Jersey.
I'm looking to do a lap on Tuesday mid afternoon, probably start at the Pumphouse lot to avoid swimming.

Did you get out there today? If so, how was it?

Anybody tryin' it out tomorrow afternoon?
It's going to be a nice day... and I don't have to work the second job at night 🙂

I'm doing a lap Wed. at 1pm with a crew of Cat 1 racers. Its gonna be a fast -paced lap. Starting at the Barry Lakes lot.

Didn't make it, I was nicely reminded I had a meeting in Peth Amboy late morning. I have a meeting tomorrow that I plan on cutting short.

Anyone know when the course will be marked for a pre-ride- trying to see if I will be able to make the cut off time and then bring my lights for the second lap

The earliest will be Friday the 3rd, but since the park is in summer mode it might not even be until the night before.

Print out the map and ride it. Really just 3 loops, one is fire road the whole way.

OK Thanks. No way I'd keep up though... My hope is to just make the cut-off time for lap 1.

Anyone know the cut off time to start Lap 2?

Pretty sure its after labor day.

If I do make the cut-off for lap 1, then that's about when I expect to cross the finish line.

That might be my best bet, since I may not get there till 4 or 5PM.

I have been thinking about this course a bit more. It is really a bit of an equalizer. It's too technical to go really fast in many of the sections. The places where it is "smooth" frequently involve climbing. I think most people will make the cutoff, thats a 6.25 mph avg. Just keep the mantra of sure and steady. This course, IMO, is mentally challenging. 10 miles of it is very raw and not ridden frequently; there is no worn in line, there are a lot of rocks. Ride heads up, don't drill it on the hills and walk something if it's too tough. Oh yeah and if you are hoofing it, please yield to mounted riders.

Thanks for the insight.
I still remember you published something similarly helpful prior to my first race ever two years ago.
I don't race alot, and I'm not fast so I rely more on stategy and stamina to finish respectably. For me, they are more like personal challenges; plus a bunch of other riders doing the same thing at the same time really feed into the energy.
The one problem I do have though is the internal battle of ego versus good sense when it comes to riding gnar that may be more prudently and efficiently walked.
Good mantra, too.

Yeah, I struggle with that one too. This is one race where it would be wise to check the ego at the start line. I have to remind myself that I will be racing the course as much or more than the other racers.

Bearscat 50 climbing

I have only raced Waywayanda onnce(2010) and really do not know the park that well other than the section te race course was on. It was a fun and very challenging course. I was wondering how much climbing to expect for the Bearscat 50. I really like climbing but it is the rocks and technical sections that have me worried.

Looking forward to the race!

Thank you.
