I'm a cheap bastard and just have basic cable at the house. What internet site has the best TDF coverage so I can check out the highlights each night?

Does your basic cable include the Versus Network? Mine does.

Versus has the TdF while the Giro was on Universal.
 
check out justin.tv, it has a lot of live broadcasts and other stuff available to watch for free.
 
I second BikenBen's post. Steephill.tv and cyclingfans.com will link to the various Justin.tv-rebroadcasts.. Cyclingfans has a twitter and facebook link if you want the lastest updates on new sites, and they update whenever a good link comes up. This way you can skip Phil and Paul doing the Lance-dance, and get Sean Kelly's laconic take on what's up on Eurosport UK or Laurent Jalabert's on Eurosport France. And Rai gives you Paulo Bettini on the back of a motorbike jamming a mic in people's faces.

versus is doing live online streaming video in english, with hd feed for like $29 for the whole tour.
 
Ok, the Versus thing might be a go for me this year. I didn't know about the HD. That's a huge improvement on what was already a pretty robust picture. Certainly better than the Justin.tv stuff, with the exception of the Japanese broadcast of the Tour de Suisse, which was awesome.
