Taking Care of a Swimming Pool

On Sept. 17, I will own a house with a swimming pool. Just in time to close it for the winter...... 🙄

Anyone have any tips/tricks/websites for me? I have no idea where to start. I did a google search and its a bit overwhelming.

Im not even sure what type of filter it has. I'll find out soon enough.

I'm serious. If you want I can set you up with a half hour phone conversation with my father. He will set you up with all you need to know. I'll be at his house this sunday for dinner

J,

One word - "Aquabot". Expensive but worth every penny, throw it in and it cleans the pool - has it's own filter so no hoses - nice. I only have to vacuum the pool in extreme cases.

Might even be able to find one on Craigslist or something, I've had mine for 8 years and and had no problems, plus they sell replacemet parts for almost anything that would break.

As a matter of fact:

I buy my chemicals from here:

I do not have a pool.

Is it true this pool is in Connecticut?

Yes.

I was given a great opportunity to relocate for a promotion at work.

I'll be living in the Huntington section of Shelton.

I forgot you have a pool Tim! I'll be picking your brains as I learn this stuff.

I have a pool too. Fire away with any questions you have J.
Thanks Jeff! I'll certainly do that, once I know what to ask.... :hmmm:

Do you have any idea how old the pool is? Inground? Pools have become pretty automated in the maintenance these days.

Closing the pool for the season is probably the trickiest part of the regiment. It's not hard, it's just that you could cause costly damage if you don't blow out all the lines properly and they freeze in the winter. You might consider hiring a pro the first year and watch over his shoulder. Then you can decide if you want to DIY next season and save some $$.

For the rest of this season, just keep the chlorinator filled with some chlorine pucks and use some algecide 60 once a week. Any pool store will stock that. Find a good pool store in your area to get free water tests for pH and stuff.

Don't some people prefer to run it w/out the chlorine, or use a chlorine substitute? I'm not sure how much value you place on organic things Jason, but I know I've heard people talking about how they don't like the chemicals in the water... Just another avenue for you to explore

Do NOT switch chlorination methods mid-season. Whatever the previous owner is using, continue for the rest of the season. Yes, there are chlorine alternatives but they all have pros/cons and you will want to work with an expert before experimenting.

I hear you can use ozone instead of chlorine. Swimming pools are expensive in time and money to maintain, especially if you hardly use it.

i dont have a pool or a pond.
looking at this tittle i thought this was the start of a new blog.

A good forum my wife used when we first put in our pool 4 years ago is "http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/index.php".

Good luck.
