Summertime CX Workouts

I realize the first official day of summer was less than a week ago and that we have to endure many more weeks of heat & humidity before fall arrives, but there are only 75 days until the first UCI cyclocross race in the world (which just happens to be in our backyard). Now that the days are getting shorter again, I’m going to start doing weekly CX workouts someplace convenient to me. I wanted to open it up to y’all if there is anybody else who is interested in doing weekly ‘cross workouts consisting of a mix of skillz drillz (off-cambers, running, barriers, etc..) and high-intensity laps of a short course.

At this point I’m thinking Wednesday evenings at a TBD location somewhere within a 20 minute drive of my place (Montclair area). We did a few workouts in Brookdale Park in Montclair/Bloomfield last fall and it worked out well unless the archers were shooting arrows at us (not joking). Also did a couple in Cedar Grove at the old Essex Co. hospital grounds near Hilltop Reservation which has excellent (read hilly) terrain and nearby singletrack.

I know there are a bunch of other CX practices that pop up closer to the start of the season and I may start doing those instead once they get going. For the time being, hit me up if you have any interest or know of a great location and want to join forces. Beginners are highly encouraged to join. I certainly don’t mind being the skinny dork in spandex riding in circles around a field jumping on and off a bike by himself but it would certainly be more fun to have company.

ah crap. i was liking the sound of a top 100. way to burst my bubble!😛

my vote is either van dessel or fisher. i LOVE my fisher, a steel Erwin, but i soooo lust after the van dessel. anyway...

...as for practice, i started doing some over the weekend: off camber stuff, some sprints, etc. there are several parks around my house that i can go to and hit all that stuff. i'll keep doing it until august then hopefully i'll start mixing it up more. like, if my ankle cooperates.

It's good to see the big guys still making steel CX bikes. The Erwin and Presidio look rad. I love the sliding dropouts so you can convo to SS. I am partial to the Presidio only because I used to live in The Presidio when they held CX Nationals in SF

I'm in!

Delish-

I would love to join you on your training rides. I live in the same area so it would be great to meet up to learn some skillz (If you don't mind dragging me around.) Weeknights and weekends are great! Let me know!

Nice! I'm shooting for Wednesday next week. probably around 6:30. Hopefully old Essex Co. Hosp grounds ball field in Cedar Grove (just off Essex rail trail) assuming they have the field mowed. Last time I was there grass was waist high which ain't going to work. I'll post more details next week once I figure out exact place and time.

Yea, I have been following along. Right now I'd be looking clinchers. I'm thinking Grifo's.
I rode both Grifos and Fangos (tubular) last year and personally prefer the Fangos--the have a little more meat on the sides for off-camber and hard cornering. Both are good though. Sort of a tastes great vs. less filling argument. Challenge sidewalls are supposedly not good for running tubeless but that may not matter to you. I am intrigued by the Clement PDX clincher which seems like a good alternative to the ubiquitous Michelin Mud II, both of which can be run tubeless with some degree of success.

Tastes great. This is cross not road biking. Less filling is for those roadie waifs.

As of right now I have no intentions of going tubeless. I am hoping though to go tubular by the time the season starts. After buying a new cx bike 10 days ago I cant possibly swing a new wheelset pass the General.

My reservation is PSI ratings and how much you can actually run. I ran the Ritchy Speedmax last year and ran them @32psi all season without a flat. I understand the benefits of tubular and tubeless but if I can run clinchers at that pressure I have a hard time justifying switching.
