Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

Conditions were great today. Roots a bit slick but overall superb. Mosquitoes weren’t bad either.

Saw these legends working on the trails. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Roots and baby head rocks are predictably slick but no mud or standing water anywhere even after all the rain. Dirt sections of trail were hard as concrete. Rock slabs were fairly grippy.

There has been about 1/4” of rain there in the past three days. Not enough to soften it up. The dirt is still moon dust dry under the surface.

We added a few more wet weather drains today.

There are two wildfires fires burning in Sterling Forest at this moment. Fortunately neither are in the vicinity of the multi use bike trails.

Parts of the park are closed.

Regardless of closures or not it’s probably best to stay away until the fires are out.

Photos taken this morning. Greenwood Lake looking east and from the Thruway in Airmont.

The Jennings Creek Wildfire (greenwood lake) is estimated at 2,000 acres and zero containment. I doubt they will be doing more than structure protection tonight, especially with the possible LODD. 1/8-1/3” of rain tomorrow night, but also coming with windier conditions. Been a while since we’ve seen a good sized fire up here. Goodbye ticks.

I heard that it was open earlier today. The contractors went to work on the new trail section. The smoke quickly chased them out.

If the smoke suddenly blows your way it’s going to be a pretty miserable time.

I didn't ride sterling due to surgery recovery, but when I passed by eagle valley and such there was just snow from plows on side of road and trails were clear. Wayway and north has snow.

Great ride on McKeags Meadow and Redback trails yesterday. Ground was a little moist but in that perfect way that added a little traction.

Minor crash going uphill after getting snagged by a rock pointing out and up at my front tire just as I was going slow and pushing down on the tire for traction. The rock was mostly hidden by leaves, so I cleared them and made a tiny ramp of smaller rocks in front of the rock for the next person.

Sterling was great yesterday, very happy I made the choice to ride there. Second time I've ever ridden there, first time alone. So many fun features. Last time I rode there was probably close to 10yrs ago, so really the first time? Next time I'll try counter-clockwise.

So the real question is how do I link this to Ringwood without riding on the road?

at this point there no real good way to avoid riding the road
