Sram Chain

Broken 2 Sram chains, switched to KMC on my sinlge speed and it's hold up very well.... I am using the X10SL KMC and feels as solid as it performs

Well, the Sram chain on my fixed is totally shot. Rusted all over. .... Sure it's been a humid summer but i shouldn't have rusted with about a maintained 200miles. Another confirmation Sram chains aren't for me. Warranty replacement...

Was this a 951? Had the same problem with one,
later read they are very prone to rust-
I typically wipe down and lube chain after the ride,
missed it after the last ride of the season (it was 26 degrees out),
and found it rusted over when I was getting ready for the season.

I've had better luck with 971 and 991's,
but maybe next go round I'll try shimano's held together with sram power links.

Does anyone use the commercial chain cleaners? I mean the plastic body ones that are used with a cleaning agent like Simple Green. These are clamped over the chain with brushes inside that spin when the chain is cranked thru by hand. I do not see any talk about these and wonder if they are any good.

IMO just dab some on rag and clean. The chain cleaners clean too much and leave too much excess. Oh and mine disintegrated after a few uses, seriously. That citrus is some strong stuff. Im still perplexed why that chain failed 200 miles out in fair weather, oh well.

I have had one for a while now. At first I thought it was a waste. So I tucked it away. I only recently start to use it for the chains that are absolutely disgusting or if I am doing a detailed cleaning on my bike. I have been very happy with the results.

TBH you very rarely should have to do such cleansing to your chain if you use the right lube and do not excessively apply it.

I have a rusty chain in my basement. I have a damp basement which is my guess why the chain rusted. However it was only on one bike. My SRAM and Shimano chains did not rust. I cant recall which brand it is. Ill check later.

i have the park tool one. its not bad at all. it comes with its own brand cleaning agent. i just mix it with some water because it seems pretty potent. i've only used it when my chain gets real nasty (riding 6MR and allaire doesn't help with the dust and/or sand)...or when i bring my bike to the shop i hate bringing it in overly nasty...

for a quick job, and 20 bucks, i think it was worth it...

Huh. Thanks for the tip. Being an engineer, I work with metals all the time. I can't imagine what chemistry in the Simple Green would cause steel to crack. My boss is a chemical engineer. I will check with him tomorrow to see if he can venture a guess.

I have heard that this version is safe for bikes:

Personally i think this is the best degreaser:

http://www.dumondetech.com/dumonde/products/bicycle-2/

Dumonde Tech’s Bio-Green Citrus Solvent is a high grade, 100% natural citrus solvent. Bio-Green Citrus Solvent is absolutely the strongest natural degreaser on the market. It is very efficient and cost effective for degreasing all parts of grease and oils. Bio-Green Citrus Solvent is very good in helping remove tubular tire glues and adhesives. It is safe on carbon fiber rims and wheels. Bio-Green Citrus Solvent is an excellent ski and snowboard base cleaner as well.

Once you go KMC... you never go back brother.

{esp for a big guy like me.. I have never broke a KMC. I have broken all of the others}

they do tend to be a bit heavier but that I believe is one of the reasons they last.

I believe I snapped a KMC that was OEM on my Flash carbon! Freak accident? Dont know but didnt by another one!
