south mountain

What a shame..I hike at SoMo fairly reguarly with my dog but have been turned off to attempting to bike there when every time I pull into the lot off Glen Ave I see at least one cop sitting back in there. Hilltop, on the other hand, has a very strong, positive MTB presence; so much that every experience has been pleasant with hikers and patrolling officers around the area wishing me a good ride or a safe ride home. I've seen a few signs posted around the trails from the Conservancy asking ALL users (and I believe even included the word "bikers") to engage in active maintenance of clearing trails of debris so there doesn't seem to be any MTB backlash at Hilltop outside of the county office. Plus, the Hilltop Grasshopper kids race gives the MTB community a bit more clout for official legal access.

I guess the only part of Hilltop I've seen is the .6 mile Grasshopper trail - I'm assuming there's more? And SoMo is so close to me. Tired of having to load my bike on my car to enjoy a non-hydrocarbon sport!

Since we constructed the enclosures several years ago, we have seen some improvement in the habitat, but it has not progressed enough lift the ban on mountain biking."

This is complete crap. When they built those stupid enclosures, they bulldozed a ton of woods to get the materials into the woods. If that doesn't reek of being a hypocrite, I don't know what does. Also, when they built the trails up in the Mayapple section, they used a handheld bulldozer without any thought of erosion or trail sustainability.

Is there a trail map of Hilltop somewhere? Where do you start, the parking lot by the baseball field?

Cool. Thanks for the map and also to ssmtbr. Just trying to have some good, clean (or muddy) fun.

Yeah, that letter from the county is complete crap. I was in there a few weeks ago and the single track was so overgrown. Also the ground there is always fairly firm after rains.
Has anyone been stopped by a cop lately in Somo for mtbing? I know they used to keep people out but I'm not sure if they enforce anymore.
