Smokey & the Bandit Extended Online Race

So I missed two double day points. Sounds like it's possible to grab those this week.

So here's an example of my excuse at paltry numbers. I swam at 6am this morning, so an hour spin around the neighborhood before the weather hits.

1 hr x double points = 4

i actually took the liberty already and moved your available missed doubles already. did that to a couple peeps too.

Sunday Coach has me down to taper for HOH.

Monday
2:20 on the way into work, looks for 26 min on the way home to get the 3 hour bump. Snow/rain the last 1/2 hour of this. Wind really kicked up before the rain and snow.

I rode this morning, too (I'll have to post the garmin later) -- and it was snowing while I rode but no rain. I can confirm that there was a sh*t ton of wind before the storm really started but for me, I'm not asking for any wind bonus because I really lucked out -- just as it was starting to pick up, I was inbound to my office and had it to my back for the last few miles. The only thing I had to deal with as a result of wind was cold ears. And I'm just the kind of hard man who laughs at slightly uncomfortable somewhat chilly ears. :getsome:

Additional suggestion: Cap the rides at 4 hours. Why does this contest always boil down to 5-6 people? Because Joe Regular logs on, had ridden 3 days in a row, asks for his 6 points, and then Bob Superman comes and posts his 5 hour ride in a blizzard from the last DD and gets 30 points. Joe Regular quits. Can you blame him?

Thats what sport class is for. I don't think we should keep dumming down the pro-class.
Pro-class should be straight up poker.

Maybe we can add a phone a friend like on Who wants to be a millionaire.

My question is does Oleg ride like this year round? is he going to go through On-Line Race withdrawel when this is over?

I guess I missed the lesson on doubles on the day after only or the next ride, which is it? Rules said random. I can't scroll through 50 pages looking for rule updates. But I do post after a ride and don't pick my ride from a mega log. However, I do premeditate my doubles for the weekend. New high score, is that bad? What does that mean? Did I break it?

Fixed double is good. Use it or loose it. This is like a race right. So when it's pooring piss or you have family plans after a race, you race on race day no matter what. No excuses. Clark, can you please move my double because I was out too late drinking and have a serious hangover? My dog had diaherra and shit all over the house. Can you move the race and come help clean up too?

Rain/wind/snow/pee on yourself while riding/gps bonus. Get rid of it. Art is subjective.

Regardless, I give credit to where credit is due. Rep clark for holding this together and getting me out to ride. I haven't exercised 5 days in a row since 2005 probably. I sure am feeling it today. I couldn't get up early enough to ride to work nor was I really motivated but I hope to ride the canal after work for an hr so I hold my streak. Buying this man a sixer and a bottle of wine. Thanks coach.

Anyway - special shout out to Kev for a solid March performance. He's just grinding it out quietly. I'm impressed.

Thanks Norm.

Here is my take on the rules:

A solely hours based competition doesn't appeal to me that much, mainly because I can't compete with it, at least not be at the top anyways. The other bonus points make it more interesting but I understand the subjectivity in a lot of the bonus items, especially the wind one. I think in the future, someone has to suggest a bonus for a certain day when it is particularly heinous out. To be honest, riding in the rain during the winter is no different than dry if you have the right gear, hands are the biggest problem but you can easily dress right to stay more than warm enough. The streak bonus is the most legit of them all because you have hard evidence (unless you’re AM) that you were out there every day. As norm mentioned, the question in this is the training benefit of doing such, but this contest isn’t about that one bit.

The star of these two winter threads is Oleg. We expect this stuff from JimV but Oleg came out of nowhere and continues to just go and go. Oleg for president!

any time. well, not in the spring/summer/fall, but the winter - any time. thanks man i appreciate it.

and get out and ride today! - i am planning on it now that i have function bicycle transportation means. if you don't it will just allow me to make fun of you. relentlessly.

i have a feeling oleg is going to take a welcome break! i'm still planning on a group ride for any takers once it dries up... in ya know... probably august at this point 😡

Hours based isn't a great way to do it, but neither is distance. Some combo of the 2 would be swell.

As a for instance, my 100-mile rides score the same as Oleg's 69-mile rides and Liong's 30-mile rides score higher than both of our's combined. So how do you make 3 guys with 3 completely different fitness levels score the same while competing in the same class?

I'm not a fan of the double days so much. Or wind. Or Rain. Or any of the other bonuses. Maybe just get rid of them in Pro, that way they can still keep things interesting for the other classes. We're all going to ride every day in Pro anywhoo.

-Jim.

3/25 - quick hour at lunch in the rainy snow:

2 (ride) + 1 (rain/snow) = 3 x DD = 6 total

Total: 92

I may ride again after work. 6 points per hour is hard to pass up if it starts rain-snowing again. But then it's kinda crappy out there. It's warm inside...

FWIW, I think this whole thing has gone off pretty well as-is. I see it like this: it in all classes how many folks actually did at least one extra ride this month just because they had signed up for this thing? That's kind of the point. For me, it helped me to start getting back in shape after being on the sideline for a month (that may not seem like a lot of time, but I haven't spent a month off the bike in years so it felt like an eternity to me) and that was a big deal because I have a really long day on the bike looming in April. After the first week, I pretty much knew that I wasn't going to win this thing as a few folks separated themselves for whatever reason - more time, more dedication, whatever - but I definitely rode more this month than I would have if I didn't do this, so I'm happy with the way it played out. If double points are there or not, I could care less. I'll use them if available, but if not, I'm happy with how this whole thing has gone.

(And I've still got a week left! I'm going to go ahead and plan to ride five hours a day and take you all out!)

Just so I understand, are rules kind of being made up as we go along?

Its not the points, but the principle.

If rules are being made up as you go along, then you should put that as a rule in the front page 🙂

No no...we did have a conversation. I don't think we ever updated the front page with the rules. I blame Dave. Tall people are hard to trust totally.

3/25 - Second ride of the day:
http://app.strava.com/activities/45854562

Same conditions as the first ride, 6 more points. I really should have just ridden 3 more hours to max out the day at 30. But then I might have never woken up tomorrow, or the rest of the week.

Total: 98

3 hrs. 3 min / 29.98 miles

6x2=12 points + rain/snow + GPS Art

Got a late start this morning, went out on a mountain bike and it started raining, so I turned around and went back home to get some rain pants.😱

Took a ride to Assunpink Park and bounced on some Equestrian Trails. Snow was very heavy and wet; clipless pedals were a pain in the ass today (full of snow and leaves). After getting home I decided to take my Fat Bike to work (thinking a quick lunch snow ride).

Came out at lunch break and there is no snow, just lots of rain. So I did some GPS Art on some snow covered fields. Snow was heavy and I had 10 Lbs. of it on my bike.

Horse Trails in the morning – 2 hrs. 7 min / 21.47 miles
Lunch time Fat Bike GPS Art – 56 min / 8.51 miles
