seans training blog:

it really does add a whole new level to mountain biking.

I once had to pedal continuously in a fixed sort of way when my freewheel stopped working halfway through a Pompton-Shepherds Lake ride. That was quite possible the least fun I've ever had on a mountain bike, riding the yellow trail without being able to coast at all. I guess if you really just like to climb and suffer without enjoying speed on the downhills, them fixed would be the ticket. Definitely not for me. Getting bucked on small log crossings because you can't shift your weight properly is not my idea of fun!

:getsome:

nownow j, that would be like a rail trail rider saying "going over the bars on one of those stupid rock rollers because i can't ride it sitting down on my comfy gel seat is not my idea of fun." 😉 it's a new skill to be learned. pedal timing, skipping the back wheel to adjust pedal position, spinning with control on downhills. while it's true i'm never gonna be going 35 mph down anything with rocks in a reasonable ss gear, 25 mph is entirely possible and fairly quick. not to mention the main draw of a fixed gear, your ability to coast wouldn't have failed if it wasn't there to begin with. :getsome:

FGMTBDP group ride! It just so happens that I have one of those sitting around.

fred, yes. it's just like language, immersion is the best way to learn.

joe, count me in. sunday? 20-30 just to make it hurt more?

I'd be scared of a fixed gear...I have bad knees, it would seem like it'd be too easy to muck 'em up.

OTOH, going back to my roadie days, almost every hardcore roadie racer I knew had a fixed gear bike that they included in their training regimen (they weren't track guys either). Seems like they used them mostly early in the season.

I just always thought they were nucking futs so I never bothered to ask the motivation for it. Though, it was quite fun watching them spin 140++ rpm on some descents 😀 Of course, early in the season I was spending my time trying not to get dropped and not throwing up...so the distraction was welcomed....hmmm maybe that is why they did it 😉

i was thinking something stupider for fixed gear like ringwood or allamuchy, but allaire is tempting in an easy way... 😉

I never be able to hang. May be after some work i can make that work. Either way sounds like a hoot. We should make arrangements soon. 🙂

yep. the cog was jb-welded on when i leved in mexico. there weren't enough threads on the surly free/free hub for a lockring. it really does add a whole new level to mountain biking.
My ENO is fixed/free, so it's just a matter of getting off my ass and doing it. Probably not this season would be my bet, but we'll see.

rode to and from work today on the rig. no gps as it had a temper tantrum.

the mornings commute hurt. been more than a week since i was on the bike for anything worth noting, and i felt it. i also reassured myself once again that i hate riding in my current selection of tights. i need something thinner. they just make my legs feel alot more sluggish than without. by the time i arrived at work i had some notable icycles in the beard. nothing crazy, just a few little stalags.

(yes, i was that exhausted. i've had a cold for going on three weeks now, it was 6:45 when i arrived, and as noted, i was not in top form this morning...)

for the afternoons commute, it had warmed up quite a bit, and wasn't precipitating when i left work, so i went with baggie riding shorts without the tights underneath. i was fine untill about halfway through the ride when those occassional flurries turned into a wintry mix.

i asked a stranger to take a photo so that i could see how stooopid i looked later(now).

i arrived home, and i was warm all over(seriously), and my legs felt great the entire ride.

icycles on one's leg hair is completely normal, right?? i know, i should have worn tights, and i'm a moron.
