Round Valley Conditions

Oh yeah, forgot to finish my update...

Cast of Characters: Kevin (Bro), Sean (Bro-in-law), Aaron (Nephew), Me

Going from the Cushetunk lot, it was smooth sailing past the troll bridge, but it got pretty bad after that. Maybe a tree down for every five minutes of pedaling, until The Summit.
Then it got REALLY bad as the trail starts to descend down to the scout camp. LOTs of BIG trees down.

We decided to bail off the trail down to the fire road, which had lots of chainsaw work done, and was totally passable until it narrows and heads back up, and was blocked by trees again.
So we bailed even further...all the way down to the water's edge, and rode along the cobbles until the scout camp field.

The rest of the way to the boat launch was as OTRA said.

1/13/2013:
RV doesn't appear to have improved at all since 12/23.

It is possible to get all the way around with only a couple climb-overs, but only by bypassing big chunks of trail and taking camp roads instead.

Many of the downed trees are 24"+ diameter, so it will take some ambitious beavers to clean things up. And they are far from the parking areas, so access for cleanup could be tricky. (My huge tandem kayak comes to mind...)

Does anybody know if there are any upcoming volunteer opportunities to help with the cleanup?

Map Legend:
Green = Cleared
Red = Trees that needs beaver action
Yellow = Tricky spot to get thru - shoreline is fairly passable

There is a triathlon scheduled for there in May that uses those trails. It does not look possible given by what you have mapped out. The course is hard enough without having to dismount every 20 feet and get over a giant fallen tree.

Unfortunately, we have been lacking representation for this park.
The need for someone to fill this position has been listed in our classifieds for quite some time, but there has not been any inquiries.

Great info thanks, I'll send an email today:
Trail Maintainers for Round Valley State Park
JORBA is seeking individuals to perform basic trail maintenance within Round Valley State Park.
The work involves clearing the trails of overgrowth and downfall using basic hand tools ( pruners, loppers, hedge trimmer and hand saws).
Work will be performed under the NJDEP VIP program with oversight from JORBA.
While there is no set schedule, hours must be tracked and reported to JORBA along with status updates.
If interested, please contact Norm: wildcat at jorba dot org

Took the pups on a long walk here today, started at the Cushetunk lot and made it half way around the lake (clockwise of course). Zero mud/ice/snow complete opposite of chimney rock and six mile for this time of the year. I have kayaked, canoed, fished and hiked this park but for some reason never think to bring my bike here for some reason. But seeing the conditions today compared to chimney rock made it seem like a good spot to get some winter miles in. Anyone down to show me how to properly ride this place later this week.

It sounds like the race loop is not cleared from what I am reading and hearing from friends that have ridden it lately. Does anyone know if there are any plans to go in with chain saws and finish clearing?

Woody will have to chime in to answer that question. He has been in contact with the Super there but not sure they even know when they will get it cleared.

I'm pretty confident that we'll have it all cleared before May. (By the way, what date in May is the Tri?)

Our TM sessions were super productive, and the park maintenence guys have been doing some chainsaw work since then.

We're also trying to get some volunteers approved for chainsaw work in hopes of speeding things up...

Thanks Woody. The tri is May 19th. I do not want to shell out 100+ dollars and have to drag my bike up puke hill. I may have to do that anyway, but not over huge trees if I can help it.

I am just going to wait it out and see what happens. I have a back up race in the works in case they do not get it cleared in time to train up there or to race.

Thanks for the info and for the hard work you are doing. Seems like a selfish thing to want to ride i n light of everything that is still going on down here at the shore.

Actually, all of the trees on Puke Hill are cleared. There are some giant tree trunks to crawl over/under on the trail leading over to it, but Puke itself is clear. No excuses. :getsome:

Give the muddy parks a break, and your legs a workout...Ride RV.

Zero mud @ RV.

Most of the trees have been cut out, just a few biggies left.

And the phone booth is fully operational!
