Round Valley Conditions

It got a little slushy today in spots where there was significant snow cover. In other sections, however, there's a good deal of ice to be wary of. The flat section of trail between the boat launch lot and the main parking lot has some short, off-camber sections that caused me to slide laterally, so I was thankful to be using flats. Studded tires would be a definite plus at this time if you really want to be safe...

You're welcome, Pat. The icy spots can sneak up on you, especially when you get off the brakes on those nice, long downhills at RV.

No rocks,
No hills,
No sleeves.
Come get it while you can!

I thought of having the short track race right on the lake, that would be boss...

Cushetunk White closed, went a few hundred feet under the powerlines and turned around, no traction

Cushtunk Blue at Pickell park, found the blue trail but blazes disappeared and had no clue where to go, turned around after a quarter mile, some dirt, but wet so moved on

RV at the South lot, Cushetunk trail up to lookout was mostly slush with some patches of dirt, no traction, next 1/3 mile ridable but no dirt, after that it was pretty much not so, instead rode down along the lake but lake itself had the best conditions, a little slushy on top which made it fairly fun, at times the it was too soft, so don't go out too far

It will be at least another 2-3 weeks before enough snow clears, Pine trail was ridable, but will be close to April before trying the loop

Did a full pseudo-loop Sunday afternoon on the Fatboy.

Was able to pedal from boat launch to about 1/2-way up Puke Hill with no major difficulty. From there to the phone booth (~2 miles) was unrideable, despite having gravity on my side most of the way. Just hiked the bike through 6-18" of mashed potatoes the whole way. In agreement with qclabrat, this may take several weeks to melt away, but I may try again this weekend. Will keep ya posted.

By the way, the phone booth still works.

The singletrack and fire road beyond the phone booth also looked totally snowbound, so I opted to jump out onto the rocky beach for the rest of the ride.
The fatbike was an absolute blast to ride on that 4-mile stretch of rocks and boulders. Just point and pedal over anything, almost no skill required.

I'll also mention that the evening switched from gloomy to gorgeous as the sun emerged under the clouds from across the reservoir and the lighting was incredible. One of those times when I'm just stunned by how beautiful the world can be.
Of course, my pics can't do it justice.

Thanks for the update. Man that sucks. But having ridden the road around RV last week Kirt & I both remarked how much more snow seemed to be out there. Hard to believe CR may be rideable earlier this year.

Nice Pictures! I live a few minutes from RV - I think a lot more has melted over the last few days. Was going to try there over the weekend also.

What does a pay phone call cost these days? Is it like $0.75?

I can't imagine they are still only $0.25 for the first 3 minutes.

checking in if RV is good to ride? even after the rain on Friday?
running out of nearby options

Hey, are there any trails here:
Pond Brook Valley green place on map

East County is probably snow-free. And Dealaman is probably at least passable. So from your house you could hit those Pond Brook trails, into the Dealaman backside (green acres, whatever that entrance is called) then around Dealaman, out the Celgene exit, hop over to East County, then out on Old Stirling road, down to Washington Valley, then dip into the Warren muni trails for a loop. In all you might get an hour with everything including the road.

Something to think on. There's also Wagner farms you could loop in though that may be a mudfest right now.

thanks Norm, never seen riders so assumed prohibited
will give it a try this week

It's just part of the town trail map. I think they claim there are trails, and anything in town is pretty much open to anything. I never bothered to go there as I figured it was junk. BUt it might be worth tooling around in there for a local scratch loop like I mentioned. You ever go behind the municipal building? It's a short trail but better than riding the tennis courts.
