15mm front 142x12 rear. Trying not to destroy my wallet.

..and are shimanos really that bad? I have deore hubs right now and besides a mid season repack and a tighten on the cones they have always been smooth for me.

Novatec hubs go for about 120-150 for a hub set, front and rear

I had the old 756 XT's on my old trance. Just like your deores as long as you are willing to put the work in, they last forever. I think the new ones have a better engagment as well.

I have had a string of bad luck with shimano cassette freehubs that have sworn me off the brand for a while now. The hubs themselves are fine once adjusted, easily serviceable. But the cassette freehubs are a disaster. Cracked shells, pawls stripping, you name it. The few I am running these days are holding up ok, but I tend to rotate through my bikes more now, so perhaps I'm simply prolonging the inevitable. The FS and fattie are running Formulas now...they aren't bling by any means, but run smooth and are easily adjusted when necessary (which has only been once in 3 years for one bike, and not at all for the other, whereas for the shimanos, my rear hubs (every stinkin one of them) would require adjustment about 3-4 times a year).

I am a big fan of Hope hubs. That being said, I recently had 2 wheelsets built for the CX bike (15mm and 142x12) and although I ultimately decided to go with Hope, the Bike Hub Store's MTB 180/270 were right at the top of my list and probably the direction I would have went had I not already owned Hopes and the bearing presses.

ill look into the bike hub store thanks folks

The bike hub stuff is fine. I have them on my cross bike. You won't notice them one way or another which is a good thing. And if something does happen, their parts are easy to come by. Surprisingly, hope stuff can be a pita when you need to replace free hubs and bearings.

also didnt want to spend a ton on hubs if i'm not even getting some super fancy carbon fiber'licious light weight rims. I wanted to experiment with the new wider rim movement and see what that's all about first hand so i found some 30/35mm wide (haven't decided on which width) alloy rims to try out. WTB asyms.
