Rear Der Adjust

Neilism

I Owe Norm $10
Hello and good day.
In an attempt to adjust my rear der. on my cross bike and have rendered it useless in the process. It is now stuck on the smallest cog in the rear and will not budge. Yes I was f'n with both the limiting screws and the barrel adjuster in every possible combination. When I use my hand to apply pressure the der. mech it moves the chain up, onto the bigger cogs as expected.....but if i take away my hand pressure and continue to peddle the bike it returns to the smallest cog. Trying to shift the rear der. does nothing.
um...help?

So the lever does nothing? Does pulling the shift cable cause the RD to move?

If you can move the cage I don't think it's your limit screws. Did you take out the cable? Is your computer on?

Reboot your PC please.

Step away from the bike and put down the screwdriver.

You will only need to touch the screws if it was not setup right to begin with OR if the der was bent.

at this point i will take it off your hand for $10 and you should really start over. trust me.

The screwdriver has been launched through the wall.
Using the shifter does nothing at this point.
I had only turned the high limit screw a couple of times, and it has been unturned to its original setting.
As for the barrel adjuster...well i have no idea where it was or where it should be or what it does for that matter because while Ive been able to learn and understand quite a few things in my life the workings of this particular mechanism escapes me time and time again even when the kind and patient souls at the my lbs explain it to me as if I were a child 😀

remember, when adjusting the derailer the the cable should have no tension in it when the chain is on the smallest cog. Then tighten down the cable and see if your shifter works.

yeah, it sounds like your cable has WAY too much slack in it. I would head to the nearest bike shop to spare myself further torment.
