Raritan 911: Robocop

What if the dude came up to you and was like, "Hey, I'm sorry to bother you while you're eating lunch, but I'm a postal worker and I noticed something suspicious in one of the neighborhoods I work. Can you maybe come over to my table when you are done eating so I can tell you about it?"

So wait, if you are on lunch, dude robs a place at gunpoint while a police officer if sitting there, the officer is just supposed to eat his lunch?
Totally different scenario. If I collapse at Dunkin Donuts I would assume the EMTs (or Police) behind me in line would come to my assistance. That said, if I see an EMT or doctor at Dunkin Donuts, I don't expect them to check out my bum knee.

I can't afford a Tesla, but if I had a friend who could afford one, I wouldn't want to be hassled by the police everytime said friend came to visit. I also wouldn't want someones lunch to be interrupted just to investigate whether I have wealthy friends or not. If it's that concerning, call it in to the station. I would bet that if DB told @davidcarson48 that someone was being robbed in the parking lot or that a horrible accident just occurred outside, he'd probably be willing to postpone his lunch a bit longer.

Fair enough, but is there an obligation for an officer to at least provide that information to the correct people? I know this is idealistic but...

Were you just cranky at that time? Maybe should've added some caffeine or carbs with that salad. You're blood sugar may have been low or something.

hahahahahahahaha

I love it. We collectively reply to the post telling Carson how he should do his job.

Hey Carson! You should SUCK IT!
What was the other option? Actually do my own job while I'm at work on a company computer? No sir!

I have several friends who are cops and dispatchers so I hear my fair share of stories. My favorite is when I hear about 911 calls that come in for vehicles parked on the street in front of people's houses and the resident calls to ask for the police to come by and investigate. When the dispatchers ask what they are doing the typical responses are "they are just sitting there parked in front of my house." - Yes we are going to tie up an officer from pro active police work (or lunch) to investigate a person in a parked car.

Enjoy your lunch and dinner @davidcarson48 you earned it

Technically we can tell coppers what to do since we pay their salaries.
An angry golfer told one of our employees to shut a mower off, it was distracting him. Then he chided him and told him I pay your salary. I do believe wiki defines "I pay your salary" as the biggest DB line ever.

So, I should have added that the car was parked in the street in front of the Mendoza residence. Not in the driveway. It makes no difference to me, from a legal perspective, but it may make a difference to some of you junior detectives. It's still not probable cause or reasonable suspicion, regardless.

Also, I don't think I conveyed the "Mendoza" aspect correctly. He mentioned the name a few times, and with a tone that insinuated that since they were Hispanic, they either couldn't afford a Maybach or were up to no good. Or both. That pissed me off as much as my interrupted meal.

And yeah, like I said, it was a Monday, but it was my Friday. So my fuse was a little short. It happens.

Not to say that you should be taking tips from randoms, but I will say that mailmen sometimes have a really good sense for what's going on in the neighborhood.

Absolutely. They have provided good info at times. They do know people and places and things. Not this time. Not this moron.

Did @davidcarson48 take this?

On my honor,
I will never betray my badge,
my integrity, my character,
or the public trust.
I will always have
the courage to hold myself
and others accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the constitution
my community and the agency I serve.

I agree the stuff here isn't solid evidence though...

You can't be serious. Even you can see the difference between a crime in progress and some idiot who thinks a guy can't afford to buy a certain car? If you need to know: yes, of course. A crime in progress, someone with a medical emergency, an accident, whatever...I'd get up. Some bullshit hunch or a noise complaint? I'm finishing lunch first.

Much better approach. I would have appreciated that at least he understood he didn't have a pressing issue. But the bottom line would have been that I can't act on hunches. First off, I'm a uniformed patrol officer. I answer calls. I don't conduct surveillance. If I told my supervisor I was going to watch that house based on that information, he'd send me to the academy for search and seizure re-training. If I called the prosecutor's office to pass that on to a narcotics detective, they would not act on it as it's nothing. Zero. If I called a judge for a warrant on the car/house, I'd probably be disciplined for misfeasance. The wheels of justice turn slowly. Especially during lunchtimes.

In summary, you guys watch too much Law and Order.

This guy gets it! But you ruined it by using Dunkin Donuts in your example.... 🙂

Thank you! Yes, we get these calls:

Hi, there's a black guy sitting in a black car on my street and it's 6am!! Yeah, lady, that's your neighbor's ride to the airport this morning. God forbid he's 5 minutes early for his pickup. Just head to Starbucks, hot yoga, get your nails done, and call The Peddie School to see where your kid is on the waiting list.

Technically we can tell coppers what to do since we pay their salaries.

Sometimes it's really easy to decide to write someone a summons on a car stop.
