Ramblings from Moe Mountain

A great day today to celebrate Earth Day in Vernon NJ. I started out by parking along route 94 in Warwick, NY
and riding up Iron Mountain road into Wawayanda Park, which dead ends and becomes Iron Mountain trail.
You can ride right around the barrier and into the park. Then you make a left onto the beginning of William Hoeferlin
trail and over to the Old Wawayanda Road trail and then back down to Route 94. This is a nice four mile loop that
climbs 700 feet up for the first two miles and than back down 700 feet for the last two. From there I took the back
roads over to Heaven Hill farm for the Earth Day celebration. They were giving away flower seed packs that you just
drop on dirt and water and they grow flowers. They had bands and food and a presentation by NYNJTC and the
Appellation Trail group. The director of Wawayanda park was there along with the NJ Senator, the mayor of Vernon,
the NJ DEP director and many other officials, and me. Everyone liked seeing my Fat Bike and knowing that I rode there.
These are some great country roads for biking, with farms and streams and mountains. I bought a nice pink plastic pig
watering can for my wife. I had free coffee and cake and the hit the road again. All in all a great morning and about a thirteen mile ride.

Lots of times when I do my morning ride I don't have a plan, like today.
I did some more trail trimming of pesky face slapping branches. Then I
headed out Double Pond trail and found that the flooded section has
receded somewhat and was rideable. Then I rode up the forbidden Cedar
Swamp trail for about 100 feet and there are blowdowns, so I retreated.
I went over to William Hoeferlin and decided to ride that back to my car.
About a mile in I lost all power and couldn't pedal for shit. Front brake
locked up. They are hydraulic. I went to remove the pads, but my tool kit
doesn't have a 2.5 allen,, so I had to remove the caliper. My first mechanical
in a long time.

If those brakes are SRAM guides or level, see this thread (might be a warranty issue).

Thanks, but I have Avid. Got home and put an old rotor in the caliper and attempted at pushing the pads back.
It didn't feel like I did a thing though. Installed the caliper and everything is good. Don't know what went on though.
I'll see how it goes tomorrow. I'll ride and then stop by the boat launch area at 9:30 to say hi to all the MBNJ peeps
that are going for a test ride of the Saturday race.

So, the last few days I’ve riding into Wawayanda from my house on local trails.
A lot of these trails have been here for the last fifty years I’ve lived here. Now
some newer trails have been added over the years by locals that like to bike here.
I’ve gotta say, they build some killer trails! Great work. I don’t hit these trails too
often because they are killer and I can’t ride them all, but the other day I became
intrigued because while returning home I was riding Banker trail, it has a new trail
leading off it. So today I just had to go check it out. It’s not very long, it just joins
up some of the other local trails, but it was very cool. Like I said, many of the trails
are too tough for me, but this new one was surprisingly very rideable for me. It
looks harder than it is, the placement of rocks to get over roots is just great. The
rock bridges across streams are sturdy and rideable. I had a great time on the local
trails today. I still came back exhausted and soaked with sweat, but I did it.
I can't even imagine how much time was spent on these trails!

I like that little section of trails over there myself. Don’t think many people ride that area except those in your hood and a few others of us.

Hey Pete, I always love the shots you get on these rides.... But that bobcat shot, there's no way it let you get all that close. Did (do) you bring another camera or is your phone camera that good?

So Sunday I went to the Cycle Lords MC biker party. I was changing my mind about this a few times.
The pluses were that I’ve known these guys for about sixteen years and they always throw a great party.
Plus the band playing was the Undead, whom I’ve known, but haven’t seen since the mid 1980’s.
The singer being Bobby Steele, an original Misfits band member. The minus is the fact it’s a miserable rainy
day and I don’t want to be out late in it driving around. I’ve done so much party crap and band crap in all my
years it’s hard to get excited over it anymore. So as I’m driving there I’m really enjoying the farm scenery even
though it’s a shitty day, I‘m warm and dry in my car, unlike some of my bicycle rides in this crappy weather.
I get there and see Bobby and I go right over and say hi, he looks and says “Pete”. I say yup. Funny thirty years
has passed and we just say hi. I let him finish setting up his equipment. I grab a beer and mingle. Everyone is happy
to see me and we do all the chit chat and go over old times. The food is always great at these party's. The band kicks
in and the beer is flowing and it’s just like the old days. Ha, I haven’t been out like this in probably three years,
but I had a great time. Not something I want to do anytime soon either, but it was fun. I stayed about three hours
and was one of the first to leave, these parties have been known to go on for quite a while.
I stopped on the way home at an abandoned farm house and picked my wife some fresh lilacs,
she always love’s the smell of these in the Spring.

things don't change!
- getting started is the hardest part, participating is rewarding, and knowing when to make an exit is an art!

I had a nice ride and got it in just before the rain. Did a little exploring just beyond the campground.
It looks more like animal trails than hiking trails and doesn't go too far, but was fun.

This is Doublepond trail, just beyond the campground. Sure is GREEN!

Hey Pete - Cross posting from your earlier post in the cougar attack thread.

Have you seen that bobcat in a particular area of the park with regularity? Just curious if he seems to have a home. It would be good to be a little more aware in that area.

I do that with the places I've seen bears, but quite frankly it doesn't work, since they seem to be just about anywhere in the park. I would not be exaggerating to say I've seen bears 50+ times at Wawayanda. I'm sure you've got that beat.

Wawayanda is teaming with wildlife. All sorts of birds including turkey, hawks, eagles, heron and owls. Porcupines, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, beaver, deer, groundhogs, coyote, a variety of snakes...lots of bear and at least one bobcat.

Based on talking to the anglers, the fishing seems pretty good, too.

While waiting for the tri to start today there was a pair of bald eagles and an osprey fishing. Pretty cool!

There is no regularity to where I've seen the bobcats, except at the intersection of the furnace road and the main road where a few people reported seeing one lately.
I'll have to ask my friend what their range is.
