Ramblings from Moe Mountain

Ha! I just like taking turns and seeing where they go. You've stumped me before and clued me in on some "new to me" stuff to explore. So, same could be said for you on how well you know that place.

I want to spend a little more time in the watershed in the coming months. There's a bunch I'm not familiar with over there.

The big snow is upon us. The roads were too dangerous to drive on and the park is closed anyway.
So I snuck in the back door onto Banker trail. It was a tough ride, lots of water, in fact way too many stream crossings.
The trail is great to ride though. Nice and slippery with the wet heavy snow. Plenty of obstacles too, branches down
and low hanging trees. Hard to see with the blowing snow too. It was a real workout today, but it feels good. Saw deer,
and an otter. I quit when it came to branches blocking the trail, I had enough of a workout without trail maintenance now.
It’s really great to get out in a big snow storm like this, my tracks were covered over on my way back.

I went over to Ringwood Manor today. The blue trail was rideable because hikers trampled it down.
Then I went across the street to the church grounds and the gate was locked, so I had to climb the snow bank.
I rode up into the park and to the lake and then exited by the back gate and road ride back to my parking spot.
Really weird for me road riding! That's something I rarely do. Kind of fun though for a change, dealing with traffic.

I figured I'd try the Furnace road today, and it was a tough ride! Very narrow people path
and trees down. I'm still glad I did it, I missed seeing this part of the park lately.
Tomorrow is the last day of BIYF (I think). It's been a fun ride.

Snowball’s Chance event in Port Jervis, NY.
I wanted to do this event to see how far I could make it.
I knew I could always quit and ride back the way I came.
So off we go cross town and up Reservoir road. I started
out midpack and quickly fell to last, but at least they were
in sight. Up into the park we go and even the young guys
were walking, so I didn’t feel too bad. We finally get to some
snowy single track and there is a big mix of walking and
riding. A lot of fun though. The morning was 18° at 9 AM,
but now we were warming to 38° and the snow was going
to crap and getting muddy. They said at the start the ride
would be five or six miles. Now at the warming tent I
checked and we were at 6.5 miles, with a few more miles
to go. Made it back to town and checked that we did 10.5
miles. More than I was ready for and it really kicked my
a$$, but it really was a fun ride and I only fell over three
times. No injuries. Back at the brewery I bought a BIG can
growler and was told I couldn’t drink it on the premises.
What da hell, so I went next door and got a slice of pizza
and sat outside at their table and drank my beer and ate pizza.
Now I need a nap!

The day after Snowball's Chance event and I feel the pain. I still got out and rode this morning though.
I wanted to just take it easy, but the snowy trails lured me in and I suffered a little more.
I like the snow, but I think I've had enough for a while and I'm looking forward to dirt.

😉 So today I joined the online bicycle community called SWIFT.
The way it works is you go and do a bicycle ride with a real bicycle on real trails or roads, outdoors in real time weather conditions.
Then you come home and upload your activity to the SWIFT community and it converts it to look like you rode indoors in your
warm basement while looking at the ride on a small screen.

Now now... be nice to the fake riders!

I had a great afternoon ride following the Hudson Valley Ramble route that leaves from Pennings farm and goes to Heaven Hill Farm.
This is a nice country roads ride passing old farms and scenic roads. Some of the biggest roadside trees I've ever seen! Nice uphills and
downhills. Lots of gear shifting for me! I've done this route before and I was longing to do it again, plus I wanted the beer at the end.

So I found this old book from 1974 by Jack Andresen. He used to live next door to my parents on Greenwood lake. I remember him as someone to look up to because his “job”, was, he stayed home and received calls from companies that needed a problem fixed. He would figure out the answer and get paid for the fix. What a great job! He had a scientific mind. He was also into ice boating and held many awards for racing in New Jersey and around the country. He perfected the iceboat for racing. I remember one day when he had me accompany him on a ride because the wind was so high he needed the weight of another rider to push the limits. Back in that day I used to work on Porsche for a dealership and when I got in that iceboat it seamed faster than any 911 that I had driven. Wow, what a fast ride! Here are some photos of the “23 Skidoo” that was his ride in the day on Greenwood lake.

That's pretty cool! I imagine when he (or you) asked your Mom, he didn't say "Can I borrow your son to use as a weight to help me push the limits on the ice boat I've been experimenting with?"

In that last pic, I bet you can get going faster than I'd be comfortable with on ice-skates.

The book is 1974, the photos and when I went for the ride was 1967. He didn't have to ask Mom,
I was married and owned my own home. I was just visiting Mom n Pop. I also did the ice skate sail
and it is crazy. I was going so fast that the skates kind of bobble,
