Post Your Doggo [woof]

I have a question for @iman29 as both a dog trainer/guardian and the owner of a Bosch 800 series dishwasher…does Shelby freak out when the dishwasher is working or after? Since we had the alliance successfully installed Bailey I’d freaking out every time it’s on and looking worried even if we just move nearby the dishwasher or handle fishes…she’s panting and shaking looking in the general direction of it…we’re most puzzled by this behavior!

Just saw this in between work meetings @serviceguy

Having not met Bailey I don't 100% know her personality, but you have commented and discussed before some of her reactive behaviors so I am commenting more from my own assumptions and previous experience with other dogs that I have worked with.

The panting and shaking is her physical response to her nerves and anxiety coming out. The new dishwasher may be low for human ears, but most likely emits a sound that triggers her supersonic dog hearing, which is also now associated to the sound of dishes (not fishes) being loaded/unloaded. And while other sounds don't seem to phase her, for whatever reason she's having a fear/anxiety response to it. Shelby loves the dishwasher because she can hover around and hopefully collect some crumbs that may fall onto the floor, but she still is riddled with fear at the sound of fireworks and really bad thunderstorms by comparison.

So what to do? Aside from selling the dishwasher and stocking up on paper plates, you will have to start a cycle (see what i did there) of desensitizing her to it. It may/may not take a few days or weeks to go through this process you need to be patient.

You will need to introduce the dishwasher to her in stages and use high value rewards to help her associate the dishwasher and sounds with something positive and not triggering her fear. It's hard to write this up without turning this post into a blog on its own but I can message you a process you can try or post it here when I have more time.

Hope that helps for now.

It makes sense and is in line with what we were thinking. The dishwasher is here to stay, it may become dog treats repository momentarily. So be it. Any suggestion on a more educated line of action would be greatly appreciated!

Havana syndrome is not good for anyone. Bailey’s mental health and well being is more important than clean dishes. I’ll be over to rip out that Bosch for you no charge.

So….quite the doggie evening. We went to pick up our latest foster Millie. On the way home I was half asleep (wife driving) and woke up going about 15mph on Rt 15 following a German Shepard who was cruising down the centerline. A Good Samaritan pulled over ahead of the dog who fortunately is friendly and went to him. We pulled up, got a hold of the pup and my wife got a lead on him. Took him home (with our new foster in the car also) and got our rescue friends to scan him for a chip, which after some shenanigans finally reunited Lucky and family. Lucky was a doll and we enjoyed meeting him. Our new foster is also a shy sweetheart so it was a pretty good doggo day!
