Between our two cats, Pauly often gets the most attention because Pauly demands the most attention - if anyone visits, or anything is going on, Pauly has to be a part of it. And he is a relentless force of nature until he gets his way. His brother Oscar (and they are actual brothers from the same litter, albeit different breeds with different fathers because cats are freaky) by contrast is much quieter and tends to avoid people he doesn't know. But in one area, he is way ahead of his brother - he's legitimately the smartest cat we've ever had by a large margin. He's figured out how to open his food bag, developed distinct meows for when he wants specific things, and he even built himself a shelter out of blankets in my den which he rebuilds every time my wife takes it down. But this week he outdid himself. On Tuesday night, I was reading in the living room and my wife was sitting across from me and we both heard a distinct opening and closing of the hall bathroom door. I walked around and the door was closed with no one around, so I went to open it and before I could, the knob turns and out walks Oscar on his back legs with his two front paws grabbing the doorknob. I just looked at him and said, "So we're doing this now, are we?" Then I moved him out of the way and shut the door and pointed at it and said, "Go ahead, let's see you do that again." So he looked at me for a moment and then walked over to the door, Hopped up, turned the knob and pulled it open. And since then he's been opening doors all over the house. We have to keep the outside doors locked or he'll eventually walk outside (at least he hasn't figured out how to unlock doors yet.) The thing that I find most interesting about this is that he's quickly identified which way each door works - he walked into my office yesterday while I was on a call and that meant he had to turn the knob and push it in. As far as I know it was the first time he's ever worked this door, but he knew to push it right away instead of pulling it like most other doors he's been opening. And when he opens doors, he basically walks in the room, gets bored after a few seconds and then leaves. So for the most part he's just doing this because he can. (Either that or he's practicing for a plan to take over the house entirely that involves a opening lots of doors ... ???) So far, he's only closed the door behind him the one time with the bathroom, but we may have to start putting doorstops all over the house to keep him from possibly locking himself in someplace while we're not home.
