So yesterday was an eye opener. Didn't feel as strong as I thought I would trying to chase the King around the Sourlands hills. Granted I'm probably chasing someone I shouldn't, but that just makes you stronger :getsome: Dustin was still sore as shit from the 40 and we/he probably bit off more than we should have for a first ride back. My new goal is to climb Hollow Rd in the Sourlands and not blow up.

Screw you, its only a ~500 foot climb but its steady and for 3 miles.

I remember the first time we sprinted up this hill and it didn't seem too bad. That was probably because we were all so siked on chasing each other up that damn thing to impress JimV. This time I tried to stay seated and keep a steady pace at 16-17MPH. At about the half way mark, the King puts it from 20% effort to 50% and blew by me with ease. I blew up twice.

Ended up logging around 33 miles and it was a good day overall.

So when did hollow road become this big climb? 😀

While the road is close to 3 miles in length, it doesn't start to go up towards the end and the grade is so low, I don't think most become even call that a climb. If I go towards this area, that is the road I take to avoid other climbs on my way to some of the longer climbs in that area. I will admit overall it is alittle deceiving as you climb alittle more than it seems, similar to the section of Long Hill Rd from Hollow. If you are out in that area, there are so many other climbs you could focus on that would present much more of a challenge. Since you are coming from the east, I would recommed Dutchtown-Zion going towards Longhill, nice even grade at the bottom and kicks up alittle at the top.

If you are set on making this climb your goal, throw in Servis Rd, which comes off and back on Hollow before hollow starts to go up. It adds a short steep section and a small downhill.

I don't think it's a big climb, but something i feel I should be able to do and bot be toast at the end of. I was crying for my mama.

OK. I was just making sure Wobbegong didn't steer you wrong to think that this was a climb as he referred to it as such one time.

So are you spinning when the going get tough or mashing through it?

You can be toast on a flat 3 miles if you push enough. Slow down and you won't be toast.

🙂

True Dat. BTW, reread your the one post and you said it is a 500' climb, unless you are talking about distance, not elevation, you don't gain anywhere near 500' on that road.

No,
I know this isn't a "climb" just something that stood out for me on our ride.

Since I come from the SS world, I usually mash through stuff. This day I rode 70% of the way mashing to keep up the speed. Once I popped I spun the whole way. I was for sure pushing myself to keep a pace, not to attack this "climb"

I guess I need to sit back and let the gears do the work. Im not used to it instead of attacking it. Or find a steady medium, not sure about that one yet.

Unless the Jay Pace has one of those fast/climbing GPS; thats where I pulled the numbers from.

probably didnt have the elevation correcton enabled...

i looked at one of my loops and it is hard to tell where hollow start/ended, but the bigger climbs in that area are around 400', so hollow is maybe 100' or 200'. Just want to keep it in perspective 😉

As far as cadence goes, you can whoop yourself either way, but spinning a high cadence taxes your cardio system more and mashing more your legs. So if you spin higher and blow up, your legs can usually carry you through alittle longer at a lower cadence while your heart stops exploding. Although, either way you can blow up.

I think Pearl is combining the totals from the bottom of hollow all the way up to Ridge Rd. That is around 3 miles from 170 ft to 560 ft. More like 400 feet.

Its the easiest route up to the top of the ridge, and the best way to keep a group ride of mixed abilities from exploding.

Anything uphill is a climb. 🙄 Its just an easier climb.

Either way, I am not the strongest road rider. I will attack this again to see if it was a fluke or If that really suck wind that bad over 400 feet of vertical.

i prefer to think of hollow road as "not flat". it really isnt a climb if an average rider can average above 18 mph over the length of the road. You gain much more elevation from the time you turn off of hollow and over to ridge.
