Oh Deer

We displaced the natural predators of deer, we need to fill that role by hunting and eating them. I prefer that over stocking the state with wolves and/ or big cats.

I’m definitely seeing more deer in populated areas than some years ago. They’re hanging out on my block in back yards regularly now, it used to be much more rare. There’s a mom deer raising babies right next door.

Hitting them with a car is bad enough. My guitar teacher hit one @50mph while riding his motorcycle last month. He’s lucky he was wearing leathers and didn’t impact anything else other than the deer and ground. Five shattered or broken ribs and a collapsed lung, it was a direct hit as the buck had leapt right into him.

So the more we cut down the forest and build, the more deer there will be, and less space to hunt. Also, animal agriculture is so heavily subsidized that it's more cost effective and convenient to just get your meat from the grocery store. And convenience is king in today's society. I'm coming around to the idea of hunting as a good thing, but we certainly haven't created the environment or incentive for it. I'd much prefer people hunted then contribute to this horrid animal agricultural system that we've created.
Where would you suggest we put the 7.5 billion people on the planet, Mars? Just about every problem in the world stems from having to feed, shelter, and move said 7.5 billion people. Don’t complain about it. Stop having kids, and tell your friends to stop having kids also. See how well that goes over.

Was there a complaint in that post somewhere?

Rick is correct. The amount of hunters has dropped significantly over a short span of time. Kids may grow up hunting, but lose the HOBBY in favor of other things. And then they won’t teach their kids how to hunt at a young age, so that whole family is very unlikely to hunt.

I counted 27 deer in a field near my house at one time. That’s insane. People purposely putting food out for wildlife is insane. Residential neighbors are gold mines for deer. Free amazing food, always manicured kentucky bluegrass or similar, and no hunting zones.

I find it crazy how much we complain about polluting the planet but all of these superstores like Costco, bus, sam's club, ShopRite etc promote so much plastic and aluminum. I hate it but it's a new normal I think. My family is guilty of it with an overfull recycling bin in just 2 weeks.

Aluminum is 100% recyclable, and cheaper to recycle than mine. Getting everyone to do it is a different story - hence deposit/returnables in other states.

Plastic - well, they are trying to figure it out (the economic part)- again getting people to do it.....
Part of it is people want to see what they are buying, and want it sealed???? mysophobia??

I think they're making progress with plant derived plastic that fully degrades. The problem is getting corporations to pay the higher prices for it. I absolutely hate single use plastic. I won't buy anything in plastic unless I really don't have any other option.

Is aluminum recyclable with the plastic liner in the cans?

The anti-gun hysteria tends to put a damper on hunting.

Used to be a pretty specific deer season in the collision industry. Now we get them all year round with a peak in the fall.

We just took in a coyote hit so I dunno if more predators will help although less common.

i'd imagine at the melting point of AL, it just turns into a gas, or can be skimmed off???
prob should look it up.

Just vaporizes at aluminum melting temp. Note almost all beer cans are lined with epoxy containing BPA.
Beer has been the only thing I drink out of a can for years. And that's one or two beers a month maybe. Thinking I'll probably switch my limited beer consumption to only glass after my fridge stock is gone.

I buy glass whenever possible and enjoy buying milk in glass containers that are returned to the same dairy farm. We really have taken steps backwards between the use of plastic (esp takeout food) and people not giving a fudge about recycling to help save the planet. Obviously there are so many other issues killing our planet, but we must still try to do our part.

This is always an amusing claim. Like there is anything we could do to "kill our planet" short of this silly fantasy:

Where i grew up in less dense suburbia the deer wouldn't let you get within 100 feet before they would run away. I had a friend there that said they could feed deer out of their hand, but he lived near lake mohawk. Then a relative in mt olive said they fed them out of their hand too. Here in hopatcong i see deer waiting around on lawns to be fed. They are like pets over here.

Another problem with the deer not covered in this thread yet is the absolute devastation of the native plant life. This has a negative impact on all other small animals in the ecosystem. Our town (Hopewell township) has been working on this for years sponsoring a deer management program. I am not sure of the exact details but I know it includes paying deer processing locations (butchers) to process the meat and to supply it to needy families in Trenton and other areas.

I really works. A lot less deer after the parks are closed for a few days for the hunt.

In NJ, you can't hunt from your car (without a special handicapped hunting license) and you can't hunt near your house. Deer learn to hang out where there are no hunters: around cars and houses. If we changed those two rules, deer would go back into the woods and I could hunt in my slippers.
