Oh Deer

there are roadkill deer all over the place.
I don't remember it being this bad.

Kinda thinking the reduced pandemic traffic lead to a population boom. (they don't have people shooting them around me)
The young ones don't understand the roads, which means the fawns aren't learning.

Kinda sad - but we should be on alert, driving and biking.
Hopefully Kev doesn't tag another one.

1. Deer hunting continues to plummet in NJ. Harvest near 80,000 in 2001, last year down to 38,000.

2. Hemorrhagic disease is killing them as well

Of course. And the solution is more hunting. If assault rifles were legal in nj you could have slaughtered that unhealthy herd in your yard.
Slaughter that herd and another is close behind. Humans are the problem, if assault rifles were legal in new Jersey we could just slaughter the kids.

Plenty o' live ones in Colts Neck. Don't recall seeing any more than I usually do.

Though there was one staring at me when I went to the car a few mornings ago...

And only humans can control them. Without hunting more deer would die horrible deaths of disease or slowly dying after being hit by cars.

In 1910 ish, the whitetail deer was nearly extinct in NJ. That wasn't from building suburbs.
NJ developed laws to increase the deer population, such as shoot bucks only.
It was a success--we were soon over-run (pun intended) with deer.
It seems we will controll the deer population with motor vehicles. Not the best solution.

I grew up hunting Pottersville, NJ. We lived off venison and veggies from the garden. At any given time it was common to have 15-20 deer hanging on the pole in front of our garage. In the summers my best friend and I would walk up and down the black river daily fishing for trout and perch. My how things have changed. If you post a picture of a dead deer, dead fish or gun the world is ending.

So the more we cut down the forest and build, the more deer there will be, and less space to hunt. Also, animal agriculture is so heavily subsidized that it's more cost effective and convenient to just get your meat from the grocery store. And convenience is king in today's society. I'm coming around to the idea of hunting as a good thing, but we certainly haven't created the environment or incentive for it. I'd much prefer people hunted then contribute to this horrid animal agricultural system that we've created.
