"Official" BIYF 2016-2017 thread

had to drop my daughter off at Rutgers before 8 this morning for some middle-school thingie. so I got some recommendations for breakfast and ended up at Hansel n Griddle. got the tomato-n-feta, salt&peppa (sorry, can't eat ketchup for breakfast). It sounded too healthy so I got some tater tots too. I originally thought I wanted a greasy spoon but then again it's hard to justify the Shoney's three trips to the bar breakfasts we used to do before caving for a 1.5hr ride. This was just right, only one good feta&tatertots burp on the ride.

Started from the 27 lot, took orange out. original plan was to go in for at least an hour so I would get a 2-hr ride whether I liked it or not. But chickened out of the "thru the water or walk on a fallen tree" before the concrete bridge (no idea how deep that water is, after the ride people told me in the lot it was only a few inches, so, well, chicken out). I did another loop of orange-red but could only muster 1.5 hours.

Bad news: my root game has completely deserted me last year. I could substitute feeble leg power for even feebler finesse on the uphills but I had nothing for the downhills, foot down in many spots. Walked 1-2.
Good news: I did not crack any ribs on Red this time. maybe there is something to be said about being a bit scared.

switchbacks are your friends: Orange is 1.9mi, 0.9mi on Red back to the beginning
had a PR on Orange, now I am up to 1300th place!! 😀

I actually saw people on the trail and in the parking lot. Nice to talk to people I am not related to, I need to get out more.

Need some bonus suggestions. I have these on hold until the timing is right:

Multi-park ride - it's going to be too warm/wet this week
Participate in a race - Doesn't seem like anything good is coming up soon, when is MTBNJ short track?
Trail Maintenance - Watchung would have been perfect but it's cancelled. I'll save this one for the re-schedule or when a few sessions a weekend start popping up.

Trail/road treasure - find something someone lost out of a vehicle/bike/whatever?

unrelated: I got paid to ride today:

I also had an oil-change-related bit, went to pick up the car.

So last week I came up with a cool route to make the Marty's Fat Fifty into a Marty's Fat Hundred. I left my house at 5:42am this morning, and headed to Marty's cutting through Tourne, Hepner, Jonathan's Woods, Mt Hope Park, some power lines, and Dickerson Mine. I got there about fifteen minutes before the start of the ride. Rails trails aren't really my thing, but I like Marty's and I like fat bikes. I also like beer and pizza, which was provided post ride.

I was very close to pulling the plug on this, because riding on the road when it's 20ish degrees really didn't appeal to me. But I set my alarm anyway, and said that if I woke up I would do it. I woke up five minutes before my alarm for some reason. I've never ridden on the road that early in the morning before, and it was actually really nice. It also being a weekend, there were basically no cars on the road. I was actually a bit bummed after an hour and a half when I realized my lights weren't necessary anymore, and I shut them off.

The actual ride was fairly uneventful, although I did see and briefly ride with a bunch of people I know. My plan was to slam pizza, drink one beer, and then head down toward Lewis Morris via some road and then Randolph Trails and Patriot's Path, and then eventually make my way home. Toward the end of the ride though, it started snowing pretty steadily, and got noticeably colder. I figured I would just use google maps and head straight home on the road. Back at the shop, I followed the pizza and beer plan, but the snow was coming down really hard. A friend of mine offered me a ride home, even though it was totally out of his way, and I eventually accepted.

We got back to my house and he came in for beers, and then my dog threw up on his foot.

I went for a ride and all was fine during the ride, but I must've strained my hamstring because it has been very sore behind my knee for the days since this ride. Figures it would happen when the weather warmed up. I'm getting to the age where I probably have to be better about warming up before rides. Unfortunately, rides from home start with an uphill.
