Now leaving: Comfort zone

apparently fox didnt have any assembled so they had to build the damn thing which i guess takes 2 weeks. he was telling me fox can be a pain in the balls to deal with so im just accepting it and rolling the bluto till i get back

i could probably put the fox on and ship it out the same day but like @jShort says the chance of it screwing up while im out on the hangover trail is not something id like to visit outside of my nightmares:

id also prefer to get at least a weeks worth of riding on the thing first and the bluto should be here by the end of the week. i can rock that with everything i have now

one good thing about this is that ill get to see if the extra expense and headache for the fox was worth it when it finally shows up

if it doesnt blow my mind i have other plans that it might work out for later on in the year...

Nice man capris'! @walter would be proud.

so the bluto is hooked up and not in jank-mode thanks to @jimvreeland and his endless parts bins
(ps: if you want to put a bluto on your bike, youre gonna need an adapter if you want anything bigger than 160mm rotors)
special shout out to @thegock for his 2mm allen to readjust my lockout cable <3

i got to test it out on the extremely gnarly terrain of 6mr as @Glenn and jim pulled me around yesterday and its a little weird. the bike definitely likes to go downhill more which is great, i just have to get used to how the front end changes as its using the travel. had a couple oh shit moments at the beginning in the twisties where the front end moved a little differently than i was accustomed to. ill spend some time on my local trails to make adjustments since i know how it all feels on this bike rigid and theres a bit more gnar here

jim again saved my ass by getting me the spokes i need without having to order a box of 100 which ruled. i started putting my front wheel together last night and as soon as i started lacing the second side i knew i was screwed. i rechecked hub specs then looked back at my sheet, and apparently i wrote the flange distance wrong on the spoke calc so i got spokes for this wheel 9mm too long. FUCKING IDIOT.

weighed the wheel anyway on my food scale and its about 3lbs 2oz, which is incredible, since the fat rims alone weigh 2 lbs each. this is gonna be awesome!
now to build the rear so i can feel better about myself, and find me some more spokes

some other good news is apparently the light i originally wanted from australia is gonna be here tomorrow, despite them saying it was backordered 6 weeks. now if i want to ride trails at night ill have 1600 floody lumens coming from my dynamo and not a weaker beam meant for road riding

ITS HAPPENING!!!!

bluto PSI is dialed, suspension makes me a happy rowdy boy. JUMP ALL OF THE THINGS. SMASH ALL DOWNHILLS.

i cant help but wonder what it would be like with a bottomless token or 2 in there though, but the 120 doesnt come with any so thats a task for after Arizona

i also just officially registered for Bearscat and the D2R2 180k

You running 120 or 100? The 100 should come with 2. I bottom out my 100 with 2 tokens. But haven't added any more yet. Ive run the 120 with 2. But I liked none better

Nice to see it coming together. Hope to see it action before you leave, or after you come back.

Shoot! I hope the light you're talking about is not the K-lite one. I just asked @jimvreeland to build me a dynowheel and I was thinking about this light. Lead times for many parts are much longer that what I expected! I better get on the case b/c otherwise I'm going to have to walk the damn thing.

Can you tell me your "electric setup"? Do you have Sinewave? Are you using a switch and a battery? Thanks!

120, but i mean i have no comparison to any other suspension setup so i dont really know if it would be better or worse, i just want to try it out

it is the k-lite, i wanted to order it a month ago but it said there was a 6 week wait, i accidentally clicked on the link in my amazon list and saw that it was in stock so i ordered it just to see what would happen and apparently ill be picking it up today, took about a week. if thats the one youre looking at order it ASAP since its just him that builds them and everyones getting crap for this years wilderness races

the setup will be SON hub > k-lite bar switch > k-lite light/sinewave > cache battery (limefuel 6000mah) > device of choice

the simpler, cheaper option is to use a Busch & Muller Luxos U which is an amazing light, but the brightness and beam pattern arent the best for offroading. it has a built in cache battery, and a bar button with a USB port all neatly built in

Thank you! That's the setup I was thinking about (wasn't sure about which battery). With this you can either run the light OR charge one thing a time, right? I was thinking about the Kemo USB charger, to be able to power two things at one time. I'm a bit worry about having enough juice for all the electronic crap I'll have: Front light, phone, watch (Garmin 910XT), main GPS (eTrex 35t) and backup GPS (800). At this point I guess the GoPro will stay and I'll power the SPOT and rear light w/ batteries.

yeah you can only power one thing at a time, light or charge a battery

there are cache batteries with multiple USB-outs so you can plug more than one thing at once, just keep in mind that the bike wont generate enough power fast enough to replenish what youre pulling out, so if you charge 3 things at once youll eventually use everything the battery has. the dynamo would probably take you days to recharge it from empty

think of the cache as a worst case scenario item where say a wire breaks and you lose connection to the hub, and you need to charge your GPS inbetween towns before you can plug in again. for the most part the battery is just there to keep things like an iphone or garmin happy when youre going slow so they dont turn off or moan about power sources every 3 seconds, the dynamo just keeps the battery "topped off"

kerry can wire the light to be powered by a usb chargeable battery also, so technically you can run two and charge one during the day. hes modified a SPOT to use a rechargable USB battery that lasts for something like 60 hours. he also has a 3D printer and can fab all kinds of mounts and shit too. hes a cool guy so if youre looking into any weird stuff like that or just info toss him an email and im sure hell help you out

ps: you can connect a rear light to the dynamo also to free you of some batteries, although ive had batteries in my rear blinkie last over a year so i doubt youll have to change those once

Thanks a lot! I put my order in for the light, a Sinewave Reactor (ouch!) and the switch. The electricity/electronics/lighting line got me totally off budget. I'm going to have to camp the whole way 🙁 I think I'm going to do this again next year just to amortize all this crap 😀

if you expect to hotel try and hang with some others at your pace, most people split seedy motel rooms to keep costs down. youre gonna spend over a grand just on snickers and soda anyway lol

klite is in, holy shit this setup rocks, so clean. all the connections are waterproof and professional grade plugs, no exposed multi-strand wiring with 900ft of extra slack

image.jpeg

light/charge switch will live right by my fork lockout on the left of my bar, its like it was born to live there

image.jpg

the high/low box will either hang out in the mesh of a feedbag or in the gastank with the battery, i think ill be mounting the light with a gopro bracket to keep it high and adjustable

now if i can just get the damn wheels built before i shit my pants

i think ive also decided to not take my DSLR with me, keeping it in my pack is gonna piss off my back, and i wont use it as much if i have to dig it out of there every 16 feet for some retarded view that exploded my brain

gopro is always gonna be around and my phone will be blasting out led zeppelin into the canyons so thatl be easily accessible too

When do you leave? I missed that somewhere in here. Looking forward to trip report and pics!

i fly out the 28th to work my first day on a new job (which has become a complete afterthought at this point) and the adventure begins the 1st - 15th
