Niner Air 9

Do you break aluminum frames on a regular basis? If not you will be fine. Im about 20

broke one alum after 6 years of beating the crap out it - was a low end Giant - been riding the Trance 2x for three seasons w/o issue - I am not a super aggressive rider but do have some lb's to loose, so I am concerned about the frame hacking my lard *ss - don't have the time or skill to be replacing frames and rebuilding bikes (that will mean more $$ in the end)
Does anybody know the weight diff between the Air 9 and the SIR frames?

Air 9 is listed at 3.1, probably a medium. As per Chris from Niner, Sir 9's are 4.4, 4.5, 5.2 and 5.4

The Sir 9 has the ablility to be run geared or as a single speed via Niners own ebb. From my experience, I would stay away from the Niner ebb. If you intend on using this as a geared ht I would get the MCR. Same frame as the Sir 9 but gear specific.

see, i've have exactly zero issues with the EBB on my SIR. ran it both SS and now 1x9. initially i had some slippage but a lot of it was user error. i didn't have the torque #s right (IIRC niner increased them) and the EBB MUST be installed completely dry when installed per whomever i spoke with at niner.

You are one of the lucky ones. The Niner team guy worked on my bike himself. He told me I was "good to go" 🙄

I've had "relative" luck with mine. I did STB on one of them, with the bolt boring a hole through the shell. They sent me a replacement but I never did end up going to get it. Guess I should do that 1 of these days.

Jake and Norm have the set screws I believe... A far simpler design that works great... According to Niner the wedge design has been improved... No more creaking and no more debating which design is better🙄... Walt was caught in the sacrificial lamb period of design development

That may be the case and for the record Niner has been very nice to me😀

macdad, not sure if you're looking to buy new or used, but I just so happen to know somebody selling a Niner Air (See my signature)...
It has been a great bike and I couldn't have been happier with it!

open to buying used though i am a bit hesitant to buy scandium considering the issues mentioned above and elsewhere - still looking at other options; willing to take time to make right choice - looking at Niner MCR and Salsa mariachi

another question: are titanium frames rigid like aluminum or supple like steel?

didn't think the price diff betw steel and Ti was too prohibive - haven't spent much time on carbon; assumed the $$ would be prohibitve

Little off but.......I have a Salsa Mamasita(Scandium w/ carbon seatstays). Got about 2 months on it and it goes like a smooth, buttery, cracked out rocket ship. If you're getting a complete bike the value is ridiculous

I like this frame...too bad they don't offer different colors...
