So now they're almost as good as previous generations SRAM AXS?
Shimano chose not to use the UDH which I find to be a point of pride (or $) vs a logic. SRAM made the entire industry redesign frames for UDH. I assume that shimano didn't embrace this because of the patents at play.Someone tell me how to feel about this
Hopefully someone will. The new wheels seem legitUnfortunately they won't made a XD cass body

It shifts fast. It was easy to adapt to and the ergonomics seem quite good. It does seem a hair more polished than XX from sram but maybe more fragile.
- We would have been very impressed with this system in 2018 and I am not sure if UDH would have come about if shimano hadn't been so slow to bring this to market. I do think people will really like it.
We will of course sell it. @Skip43 who works in our shop has a complete kit on his switchblade and he seems to be enjoying it.
The new wheels rode really well. Unfortunately they won't made a XD cass body, so they have shut out 95% of the people who might ride the wheels. Also no superboost.
The brakes however are really impressive and a big jump forward for shimano. This would also make a bigger splash if Maven/Motive hadn't come out before the new XTR brakes.
I was just about to listen to this.Shimano has a patent for a direct mount derailleur, so I'm guessing that's going to come in the not so distant future. It will likely not be compatible with current 12 speed. Basically the same path as SRAM but years later.
I think the various patents in this space screwed them up. They basically admitted as much in a podcast with Escape Collective.

Geek Warning | Special ep: Shimano’s MTB Product Manager on the new XTR Di2
Seven years have passed since we last saw an updated version of Shimano’s flagship mountain bike group. Assuming you weren’t holding your breath, and as a result are still with us, then today is the day of the update.Yes, new XTR Di2 M9200 is here. It represents Shimano’s delayed entry into true...share.transistor.fm
I thought SRAM left the patents for XD and UDH wide open for others to adopt?
Think of all the money you’ll save by never replacing a shifter cable again.I'm really happy when new fancy innovation is more expensive but also gives me basically no reason to upgrade.
XT Shimano 12-speed mechanical has worked pretty flawlessly for me. Never had to adjust the shifter after install. Components are cheap and very light. This would save me a cable, increased weight and cost and a battery to charge. I can barely remember to check my tire pressure before leaving the house.
I wonder if Shimano would do better releasing this new wireless in SLX/XT/XTR at the same time. XTR pricing just makes me ignore it entirely and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Then again I don't feel any need to upgrade bike components anymore unless it increases comfort or suspension performance. With Shimano it's very diminishing returns going from Deore to a higher level.

I think all the new XTR is compatible with your current setup. You could just buy a shifter and derailleur and be good to go. That’s a nice option to have and a luxury that SRAM didn’t give to the consumers with T-Type.

I think it's basically the same thing with SRAM now. If you have a hanger style 12 speed SRAM setup you can buy an upgrade kit. If you're rocking the new mechanical transmission they now have a wireless upgrade kit.You just needed the shifter and derailleur to upgrade to regular AXS...isn't that what it should be compared to?
Transmission is a completely different animal.
Its shimano so ofoucrse it will be smoother shifting than sram.
For you. I’m just giving my perspective. If I had XT 12 speed, I would definitely look at that as an option. My point was that it is an actual option. And that’s a positive. But in reality if my $80 XT rear derailleur broke on a rock I'd look at the price of the wireless derailleur and just buy another mechanical derailleur. I'm not saying the wireless isn't nice, just for me there's no way it provides enough benefit.
That’s true, but if you were invested in Eagle AXS on multiple bikes and’s enjoyed the ability to swap wheels between them (I know, this is a very specific example …..me - 😂) and then all of a sudden the new-new group set comes out and it’s an all or nothing upgrade (derailleur, cassette, chain). that kinda sucks. Especially when We’re talking $500 cassettes and $700 derailleur. You just needed the shifter and derailleur to upgrade to regular AXS...isn't that what it should be compared to?
