my new fun/commuter bike build?

Hey,

Nice ride. Glad everything worked out for you. Is that a fixie or just SS?

Tim

P.S. The beer is tasty, thanks. 😀

Good to hear Tim. It's fixed, the gear ratio (right now) is great for tooling around and my nice short ride to work.

closing statement:

this bike includes the legendary bonefishjake bontrager saddle.

Commuting is a great way to get time on the bike and stay under the radar... Knowing the bike is there waiting for you after s stressful day is a bonus that can not be put in words... I hope you get a good route together and make this a habit...

Spence,

My commute is only 3.5 miles, I barely warm up or sweat on it. It almost feels like a waste to get all geared up and roll for 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll ride in and take a longer ride back home, but the ride in and out is flat and boring.

It does only take me an extra 5 minutes to ride in than drive 😛

I wouldnt go by your car route to determine how long of a bike commute you have... You may have to take the unconventional route to get in a bit of miles... It can be kept short as well for a little activity on none riding days😀

Sorry didn't hit on the "gear up" or "boring" piece of your comment... Getting dressed should be quick for a man🙂... If it is boring then pick your punck ass up and pedal harder🙂... Nah, with a fixed gear the ride can always be fun... Work on track standing at stop lights, work on pedaling full circles, etc etc etc... The skies the limit when you are in charge of making your own fun

ha, im so close to work my car route is the only real way to get here 😛

it should be a lot of fun, even for 3.5 miles on the fixed gear i should have some entertaining stories to tell.

awesome..i love riding fixed, its so fun, but throw a front brake on there for everyones safety

Want to throw a front brake on for sure. Going to annoy the dudes at Halters today; I have a bmx brake lever but the bars are too thick for it 🙁

I know this is a low budget build, and you're probably not looking for top shelf parts (maybe you are, I dunno.)

I have a ton (and I mean TON) of bike parts off junk bikes. Still have about 25 bikes to strip down in the backyard, but I have gone through at least 40 already and separated out all the components into bins. Went out during Mt. olive's 'bulk item garbage week' and saved 90 bikes; some will be fixed up and re-sold, most will be stripped and I'll build some mutant bikes and sell some decent parts.

If you want anything like levers, v brakes, cables, clamps, etc., just hit me up. I'll let you take whatever you need.

BTW I have no clue where you are, but I am in Roxbury for relative purposes.

Thanks a lot man! I think I have a front brake somewhere in my closet, If I don't I will glady pick one of those up.

Top shelf parts are a no-no. Just looking for crap that works. If you come across any short frames (5 foot range short for mandi 🙂) I'll take one of your hands!

I also have about 30 old road bike brakes in a box and a bunch of road brake levers. Not too sure about bmx levers. You can look through the stuff and take whatever, but Spylab is probably closer to you and not sure when I'll be riding with you next.

I'm not alone any more!

Wow, I thought that I was the only one who horded old bikes and bike parts. I have to break the bikes down quickly so I can keep peace with the wife.

Good luck on your bike build. I'm just enjoying reading about the other people who have a cache of parts.

Cheers,
"slow" joe

Went to Tim's house after Diablo and picked up the missing pieces. Road it around our apartment complex and realized how much fun this little thing is going to be. A couple of months ago I picked up a wheelset for this thing from Kevin. It rides at a nice slow pace which will be nice for my short 3 mile commute to work and to dink around on instead of tour-de-francing on my geared bike. Just need some argyle socks and I'm set. Here is the final piece; Just need some bar tape. I may flip the bars and be ultra trendy 😉

Thanks to Kevin and Tim for getting the random parts of this bike up and running. I built this up mostly because my old roommate bought this for me as a joke. He knew I liked bikes and thought it would be a funny piece of junk for me to have. He passed away a couple of months ago and I had to finish this thing. Thanks again buddy.

looks pretty cool, how did the project cost you?

bought the rear wheel for 40.
rear cog for 15.
sandpaper and pain for 10.
griptape for 15.
everything else is free, found in the parts bin or donated from forum members =)
so 80 bucks later and almost two years later, here we are!
