Did you get the A3 new? Diesel version?

And a surfboard may have been a good idea for when it rains in order to get past McCarter. Ya know where it floods, right before the overpass/entry to the highways...that shit can get serious, quick.

Have you been to the American girl doll store before?

I have not. If you tell me I need to bring the beer & glue before, I'll do it. My plan was to drop Julia & her grandparents off there while Nat and I went to Chinatown. Apparently that's out now, I don't know why. You know how you have those situations where logic goes out the window and random useless points are brought up to justify something that makes no sense? Oh right, of course you do, since you're married too. Yeah, it's like that.

Someone needs to get video of Norm having tea at the doll store.

My wife says we're not going to do that. I wonder what the point is then. I mean, if it's just to go buy her yet another one of these things, do we really need to truck the whole family all the way to 49th? That doubles the cost of this, if not triples it.

What's a good place to get a quick bite around 49th & 5th?

Of course I know my mom will probably buy her whatever she wants. I'll do my best to get video of whatever transpires. No guarantees I'll be sober.

New A3, yes on the diesel. It's kinda cool getting in the car and seeing 620 miles left to go in the tank. Driving 90 mph on route 78 does not get you that stated 42 mpg though. Funny how it drops like a brick pretty quickly. Having said that I've gone 200 miles already and the tank is 7/8 full still.

I avoid 21, and hop on Broad Street then back-door it. Much better to drive through the hood. Less traffic and such. Plus no traffic cameras to snag you when you try to slip through a yellow-turning-red light. I never do that. I'm just saying.

i have been to the one in NYC several times and to the one in CHI. i hate to tell you this, but going to that place on a weekend is downright madness. you will want to kill yourself.

oh, and have you looked at the prices of the "clothes" for these dolls? it's like the mother f'ing Gucci of doll clothing. do the math and figure out what it would cost YOU to buy that stuff at scale. i think it's like 1/32 or something? it may approach the price of an ounce of gold.

to eat? there's a heartland brewery right in that area that i've done a few times. under NO circumstances get talked into Mars 2112. For your own safety, DO. NOT. GO. ever. i used to eat at Sushi Den (6th ave) like once a week when i worked in that area. it's on 49 btwn 6th/7th. apparently there is one right around the corner (madison ave) from the american girl doll hell. can't speak to that one though. If you want just flat out, solid food, Rosie O'Grady's is great. i think it's on the corner of 52/7th. of course Times Square is just a few blocks away if you're interested in TGI Friday's. they will have beer.

All the way to NYC for a doll?

So glad I had a boy. Although I'll probably end up with twin girls next for saying that.

Nice! I was looking at them online last week. I love my truck to death, but 13mpg's is killing me. I'll be curious to hear how you like the A3 after you put some miles on it and what it's fuel economy is like after break-in. You using it to carry the bikes too?

And fwiw...theres a red light camera on Broad too. Its either at the intersection of Murrary or Parkhurst. I can't remember which one atm. Something like that though.

oh, just you wait. 😀

you'll be like me (this time) though: up to your eye balls in matchbox cars, matchbox tracks, thomas the train, and train tracks. and if you think the american girl doll stuff is cake, wait 'til you get the sticker shock from buying those little wooden trains.

So far so good, but it's only a few days old. I don't have a hitch rack yet, but looking into it. Currently I take the Awesome Van* when I need the bikes to go somewhere. It's actually a ton more convenient.

I don't go Broad the whole way - that's where I got snagged. At the CVS (or Rite Aid) on Broad I take a right then left at the tire joint and split the difference between Broad & 21. It runs me right in front of the Pru Center, where I park across the street. Well, I take 1 more right-left to get on Mulberry which is where I end up.

Jake - I glossed over all those words because I'm in denial. But I did take in the last word, and the 3 before that once I saw the last 1. I may need to BYO. Appreciate the input. I'm thinking lunch will be as quick as possible. I may strap an ammunition belt across my shoulder full of airplane bottles.

Jeremy - I will drive to Philly for an $8 cheese steak, so I can't give her too much shit for this. Granted, it would be a lot easier to order the damn thing. But it's all about "the experience", which is another way to say "let's see how fast we can make daddy gray or bald or both." Oh and wait until your 4th trip to the Crayola Factory. You'll want to strap dynamite to your balls.

I figure if I aim low enough the place can't be any lower than my expectations. But Jake is suggesting that's almost impossible. I'm sure some of you are thinking, "Dude, it's your kid's birthday, suck it up." But see, I know how this will go. She'll be moderately excited to go, then be impatient. She'll be briefly excited to get the new doll. But then as soon as it's time to go she'll think I can instantly transform us home, and will whine the whole way home then be exhausted, at which point we'll drag her to a peewee game which is 1 step above 52 Card Pickup in terms of organization. By the end of the day I'll be cooked, at which point we'll have to go home and make dinner. Fu Feng Yuan**, anyone?

**the new awful Chinese place down by the train station

I ate my lunch already. This is what happens when you get to work so early. Thanks again to Utah for the fish. Someone can rearrange that into a nod to Douglas Adams, I'm too lazy.

This statement me just gave me a flashback to my childhood....I think I understand now why I learned how to ski at age 4, ride a motorcycle at age 7, and drive a car at age 10.

So long, and thanks for all the fish (Utah).

On it.

To combine a trip to Crayola-ville and cheesesteaks, I recommend dropping by Joe's in Phillipsburg. Reasonably on the way, and tasty.

if you want a quick lunch in NYC, hit Panera. or drive home and eat.

and hey, maybe it won't be packed wall to wall with people. after all, it will be 72* and sunny all weekend. maybe no one will want to walk around 5th ave?

regardless, DO NOT GO TO MARS 2112.

Unless it is a matter of needing to get something extremely quick, my wife will not eat at chain places (at least the ones we have) when in any type of city. I once took her to a Qdoba in philly as I thought we were just having a quick meal and it still comes up from time to time.

At what age did your parents separate again? 🙂

I went to HS in P'burg and have had many (too many) Joe's steaks. The last time we went I was disappointed, but it's been a few years now. I should give it a shot. Maybe I'll ride my bike there/back. It's probably like 40 miles 1 way? Maybe I'll do that instead of going to the American Girl Doll store.

Jake - yeah, I'm banking on the fact that the weather will be so bad nobody will want to be out there. Wait, this isn't going to work. Mars 2112, got it. You know that if the chance arises, I have to go there, right? I mean, the stars would need to align and catch fire for Julia to point to this place and say she wants to eat there. But if she does, I have to pick up this triple dog dare.

If I have to I'll stuff my pockets with meat.

I like Phish too. But let's not turn this into the retard thread of the day. Utah & Capers, you both get a demerit for that. I'm warming up my Garbage Heap Gatling Gun as we speak.

What's the most efficient way to get 5 people where I need to be? I'd just as soon drive, but I hesitate to pay $450 an hour to park. Options? Keep in mind 2 retired people and a 6 year old. And a drunk dad. Anyone own a tank?

drive. there's a hippodome(sp?) parking garage on 43rd between5/6th or the lot across from my office on 47th between 6/7th. you'll be in for about $40 plus tolls back to NJ. sure beats the germ farm that is mass transit and you're not on anyone's schedule but you're own.

Settle down...2 comments about a band and you think this going to retard status? Must be that new car that's bringing out this attitude.

Taking the train leaves the option to HAVE to go to catch the train. Driving in, you are stuck til whenever the pity gods shine down on you. Besides, taking the train makes people who listen to Phish happy. Win/Win

Maybe I have not been going to Joe's long enough, but I have not been disappointed. Found it maybe 6-7 years ago when exploring the area,
and now it's a regular stop when I'm headed to PA.

Speaking of driving- congrats on the new ride-
do diesels require a break-in period?
Just wondering about rocking 90mph in the first tank.
