nice looking ride manny! how's the tire clearance in the back? it looks like you have some room with those tires.

clearance pics

Thanks ppl! I gots some room. This is just a little above par with any other 26" bike that fits 650b's well. I'll probably slap some electrical tape to protect my frame a tad more. These are 2.3 neo-motos so they are pretty wide and 2.3 is too much for me riding XC. I will probably go with a pair of 650b 2.0's in the near future. That will even give me a little more clearance 😀. And If I'm really really digging this setup I'll splurge on some Stans ZTR 650bs.

When I was looking for a FS bike. I was really looking at the Ventana El Bastardo but it was just an inch from what I was looking for and I didn't want to break the bank for a wheel size that we don't know what will happen. So I went with this to test the waters. I will put the offer out there that if you want to see if your bike fits 650Bs just let me know.

clearance looks pretty good to me - especially with 2.3s. i'm liking that set up. don should be excited to see this.

i'm riding some 2.3s now myself... definitely overkill for x/c but they are on the bike and paid for, and also amazingly round!

sweet setup manny. whats that gem weighing in at.

It's actually a bit heavy for a carbon 😱 It was 23 and and change stock but these rims/tires combo is heavy. Now 26lbs. Hoping my new parts will take that down a notch. I've been trying to go 1x9 too so that might help. But my 1x9 efforts have failed thus far. The blackring hits my stays and the jumpstump doesn't accomodate my ovalized tubing. I have to contact BBG and see how big their small ring bash thing is. It's either that or go the expensive route and dump $150 on a MRP G2 which is absurd. I'd rather just keep full gears.

You and I can't be the only ones 😀

Nice ride! When are you taking it out?

My first ride was at 6mile last week. I was the only one out of the group of 7 without a 29er. Except for Forest's 26" but he's still a child 🙂 Keep in mind I didn't ride my stumpjumper since 7/12/09. That is almost two months back. I didn't want to ride 26" wheels then jump on the 650bs and be like oh god it's so much better. Of course you will be able to tell the difference like that. So I just threw them on without a comparison and still I noticed the difference! I don't know why some people say the difference is too small and doesn't matter. As you can see from the comparison pics they are very different. Even with 2.0 tires I believe there will be a significant difference. Once I hopped on the bike I felt the wheel size brought me higher and the way it rolled. I'm not going to say the generic 650B sayings. I'm just going to say for XC riding it rolls better! They felt really comfortable under me and I noticed how little less I had to pedal when coasting and when I went up to an incline I noticed how they just transitioned better into the move compared to both a 26 or a 29. And it handled the two climbs on the old red just fine. It didn't feel squirly at times like the 26 climbing and it felt like I had to work less. :hmmm: Well these are all my "feelings" thus far and based on the first ride it just seems to be a good man to wheel size ratio for me.

I'm going to write a full review tomorrow but I'll give you the gist. The fit and geometry on that ride is spot on. Light and maneuverable. The moment I hoped onto it I was doing hops on the fire road from one side to the other. Where it excelled was the turning and going through the flowy sections. Most importantly, there is no OTB feeling on the other side of obstacles compared to my 26" FS and I put the front wheel in some awkward places today. It was just a very well balanced bike. A 650b specific frame just feels natural. And yea, there were things I didn't like about the ride too.

I've made changes to my bumpjumper a while back. An overdue update: I went 1x9 with the MRP 1.x and ESI chunky grips. Added a matching Ritchey WCS post too. I also changed the rear to a 2.0 Quasi-Moto. Great tire! Lower profile, light, and fast. And surprisingly it does well from wet to dry and hardpack to rocks. It now sits at 23 pounds with these damn heavy wheels still and tubes nonetheless. I tried to Gorilla Tape the rear but the bead was way too loose. I didn't try the front Neo-Moto yet though. I've read these Velocity Blunts/Pacenti combo ghetto tube nicely though. Hopefully my front bead isn't like that. If I weren't so busy building other bikes I would have some funds for the Stans 355s. Oh well. More bikes are better! 😀

BTW, I know what I mean by squirly, but it doesn't seem to fit in this case since the "climbs" aren't steep. Just curios on what you ment.
On the 26" format my front ends likes to steer all over the place on climbs. Even on the Reign X. Come to think of it, happened last week on the pipeline with the 26". I don't feel this happening much on the 650bs. Maybe a little more momentum from the wheels and more contact surface? Beats me. Maybe just more confident on the tweener wheel.

I have my gf's Scalpel setup with a 650b on the front and a 26" on the rear.
She loves the bike wheel up front. It really changed her riding for the better.
