MTBNJ Short Track Race #2

Nice little roller, I now wished I raced just for that one jump. It would be fun hitting it at speed and catching nice air.
It was a blast, I caught more and more air each lap... That's me at 1:30 with the nice pink Number plate getting just a bit of jump..

There seemed to be 2 different approaches to it. Either absorb it with your arms and legs to get up and down fast, or launch.

I have a whole bunch of video clips (lots of slow mo stuff too). I don't personally know anyone that was in the race, I just had a blast capturing the action. My son called me strange for videotaping a race where I don't know anyone, but it's not the first time someone has called me strange. If people are interested I will put all clips together (by event) and post them.

I'm interested in using this as promo in some form. How much you got? I'd like to mix this & some still shots to put something together.

Who else finds it funny that it's the old guy in last place with a rigid single speed who launches off the bump 😀

I have clips for the Women and Sport starts (mostly lap #1, very similar to the Crazy/Expert start that I posted), plus about 10-15 slow mo clips from that race. For the Expert race, I have maybe one or two more general race clips, and probably 40-50 slow mo clips.

I didn't have time to wait and get the fat bike start (I had barely enough time to get up the hill).

But yeah, whatever you want. I can either put something together or just give them to you.

I like my pic of Shilling too

No lack of faith here Norm. It was clear from the advance pics of all the work you guys were doing that it was going to be a great course. I just had other plans. If this week follows suit then I'll be there for round 3.

I just like to quote Star Wars. I know race #1 was not your all-time favorite race ever. Hopefully we can make that up this weekend.

Thanks for posting the videos. Slow Mo stuff is so cool. Hopefully you met a bunch of people at the race to put face to screen name. In that video, you're looking at (in order) Woody, myself, Pearl, a guy named Ben, UtahJoe then Mitch, the old man making us young 'uns look like roadies. I very nearly endoed in that spot on the first lap.

A worthless recap? Since I don't have a blog here sure, why not! So.

Week 1 I was sick as a dog, but I paids my money dammit! So I circulated. Cheered the crew on for a little after, then spent the rest of the day home in bed with the fever chills.

Week 2 I signed up for Sport as Fatbike was looking like another slugfest between Jim, Segundo, and Woody, and I'm not in that weight class. Plus I figured I'd be in the way of the fast guys towards the end. I brought the Fat and my 29er, because aren't I so special. The Mukluk was not needed; the pre-ride revealed MTBNJ had done such a good job on the track I got to ride my skinny bike. Yaa, go fast! The fatbike was decidedly more sure footed on the ice-rink parking lot, though.

I had zero expectations except "go hard and enjoy". Even talked a buddy into coming so I'd have someone to roll with. Well, the horn (wait, bell, siren..what was it?) sounded, the stupid hit me, and strangely enough I was first into the woods. After a climb no less. Weird. I thought "well I can't slack off now, I'm winning!". After a lap or two I heard someone on my wheel, it wasn't a girl, and I hadn't lapped anyone. Crap, now it's a race.

Turns out BJ was a fun dance partner. We'd plan passes, call stuff out, he even said "this is the most polite mountain bike race I've ever done!". The ladies were especially cheerful and accommodating. Couple times BJ gapped me I made up when we hit traffic, but overall I was pretty sure he had more in the tank even though I led some. But bonus! BJ said "I don't drink, so either way the first place beer is yours." Sweet! We were nose to tail until Norm showed the 3 to go, BJ charged up the hill, and that was about it. Matty said helpfully on the last lap "you're clear of third, but he's getting away." Yep, sadly, I see that. And that's how it ended, which I was thrilled with anyway.

I have to say it was a really fun race with the crew all hollering and cheering us on. JP at one point said "are these guys racing for first? This is awesome!" It was a very good time and thanks again for all the effort.
I had a blast, met some new friends, and my non-victory victory beer was indeed sweet. 😀

dave, seriously, that was fun to watch. wish i could have been in other spots on the course. BJ is totally a great character.
