Motorcycles.... where do i start?

😀

Seriously tho, there's a whole thread on here about Gas powered bikes and riders somewhere they can probably guide you best.

First thing is to sign up and take this course….

i wanted to take the riders course but didnt, it was a full weekend which may not be a big deal for you, but was for me. as a cyclist some of the stuff transfer over, sorta.

im sure its the same in NC but the motorcycle "permit" covers you for like 6 months and you can learn to ride by yourself. then you have to take your test which was pretty easy, even on my cafe racer'd out bike.

As someone who has traveled by moto for many years. 5 x cross country. Southern Spain. Nova Scotia from Jersey, I would highly recommend the motorcycle books by Lee parks, motorcycle drivers safety books. Know what this means: SIPDE.
Always buy and wear full ce protective gear.
The best memories of all of my later 30’s until I turned 50 were on my three motorcycles.

2006 Buel XB9SX CityCross 28k miles
2009 Buell XB12X Ulysses 26k miles
2014 Yamaha Super Tenere 26k miles
Rented two BMW 1200 GS.

Great way to see the world.
Got back into mountain biking and sometimes miss the total freedom of touring. But now I have my ram ProMaster city van set up as a tiny
RV. That takes me and my mtbike where I want to go.
Good luck and be safe.

Enjoy, Paul, if you dive in, it's not quite like anything else.

I second Rider Education of NJ, good people with a single purpose.
Buy the best helmet and PPE you can afford. Wear it.
Get something reasonably nimble to learn on. Practice picking it up from the ground in case you drop it.
I graduated at a young age from a YZ80, to a too big CR125, then eventually to a to a GPZ550; truthfully that did all I asked it to. There was a CB400 in there somewhere too.
My buddy goes the other way with an old school 1000 Interceptor and a Vulcan 88 ; I find both of them too bulky for me (yes, even the Interceptor.)
Always assume everyone else on the road can't see you, and/or is trying to kill you.
Car & Truck drivers in NJ absolutely DNGAF about anything except that urgent txt coming in from Mayhem.

This x100.

Yes absolutely take a class. Do you have any dirt bike experience? It's a great way to get familiar with general controls. Biking is or course good, you'll at least be comfortable on two wheels to an extent. It's much tougher now to find legal (or even available) places to dirty ride than when I grew up...

Are you thinking dirt/adventure type bike or street? As others mentioned a dual-purpose bike is a great lightweight entry point but not so hot on the highway. If street, there's fortunately a ton of great 300-400cc beginner bikes that don't suck. I highly recommend buying used (anyone here would probably be glad to assist) as bike depreciation is nuts plus there's a chance you'll drop it which sucks less if it's already a little scuffed.

Gear is critical, at least a jacket, boots, gloves and a good lid. On the street you have to assume everyone is trying to kill you and to ride accordingly.

More information please! 🙂

Did you get to ride the sandpits in montville at changebridge and 202?
What about the ones in parsippany(mt lakes?) at 46 & Lackawana?

Never went to Montville but we did fart around at the ones off 46. Spent a lot of time in Splitrock and the quarry down the road from Stevens. I remember trucks and trailers lining the road there, it was a huge scene.
