Meeting w/park superintendent

Good news, received this message from our contact at the county:

I just wanted you to know that we will be installing yellow trail crossing signs and advanced warning signs on South Middlebush Road in the next few weeks.

This is an amazingly quick response, anything more required a design. Will follow up in the future flashing lights and a painted cross walk is an option for the future.

pretty awesome thanks guys!

A big thanks to JORBA's new road engineering department @stb222 and @clarkenstein when I drove on Middlebush today I saw 2 signs up in each direction including signs with arrows right at the crossing. Well done!

You can see both signs in the pic below headed towards Blackwell Mills.

That’s a good start. Next we need the flashing light setup.

It can't be worse than no lights can it??
You just have to be careful. These flashing lights can be a false sense of security. So many times I've seen cars blowing through these flashing lights, despite a pedestrian pushing the button to cross the intersection. As a pedestrian you still have to make sure the car is stopped before crossing, you can't assume the car is going to stop, even though you have the right of way.

Need

Lights would be fantastic; but honestly, painting a crosswalk at the crossing would be a more impactful (and cheaper) addition. The crossing is in an unfortunate location. It’s at the bottom of a hollow that’s adjacent to a causeway (minor that it is). Even with signs (and I’m thankful for the signs), drivers aren’t “looking” for pedestrians there. Having a painted crossing lane would aid drivers in pinpointing where to look.

@clarkenstein and I met with the Somerset County assistant county engineer at the South Middlebush crossing this morning. Traffic was almost non-stop in the 20-30 min we were at the crossing, which is exactly what we wanted. There was a recognition that improvements at the crossing are warranted. It was also noted that there is no current signage on the trail approaching the crossing, which is something we brought to the DEP superintendent.

It was a good meeting and we feel we achieved exactly what we wanted to do, show the county the safety concern and keep the ball rolling. Please keep in mind that this is one step in the right direction, there won't be improvements tomorrow, next week or a month from now.

We also made a connection between Somerset County and the new DEP superintendent, which Somerset has not met yet.

This sign was there today :
