Final test ride - Mondraker Crafty R.

Despite being on the portly side at ~54 lbs. on my Park scale (I literally had trouble lifting it up), it hides the weight well when riding. There's the XC race at Nesh today, so I went to my other local spot - Pennypack. Naturally, I get there and I see "Race" signs. Whut? There was a trail race this morning. Fortunately, I was able to avoid them for the most part and got a nice loop in.

The Mondraker has 4 modes: Eco, Tour+, eMTB and Boost. While I'm sure these can be adjusted after the bike is paired to a phone app, I honestly didn't want to deal with that and dealt with the stock settings (or whatever settings the last person who fiddled with them set them). Eco is barely usable, so I spent most of the time in Tour+ mode. eMTB and Boost were relatively close. This bike has the Bosch drive system and thus really wants you to spin. Once I started doing that more, I got along with it better. Battery life was decent - the ride started with 99% charge and after just under 11 miles, still had 75% charge left. However, similar to riding at 6-Mile last weekend, sight lines aren't great and once again it was a beautiful day, so I didn't really push the pace hard out of respect for other trail users.

Taking jdog's advice about "climb a trail you usually avoid" I rode up a trail we usually only go down. A bombed-out trail near the stable with some decent sized root ledges. It was fun and the bike made it up the ledges with ease.

That said, a decision has been made... deposit at Halter's has been left... and according to jdog, the order is in. So in a week or so, we'll see what I chose. 😉 In the meantime, he was gracious enough to let me borrow the Moterra until it arrives.

Thank you for indulging my wordy posts.

I set the low end of trail mode to the top of eco, then set the assist curve to meet full boost at the top end. If I'm on it, I probably want boost power. So I don't need to change modes.

I would take the level over the crafty all day long…. Big travel for big fun😎

Does the 29er rear wheel help this bike turn?
I have a 27.5 plus in the rear( mullet) …. I will assume you were ask about the front…Not in my opinion. A smaller wheel is easier to turn( example: a furniture dolly or shopping cart). The axle to ground on a 27.5 wheel is 360ish mm while a 29er is 375ish mm, even with the shorter fork offsets of newer forks, I still feel this hight. The main advantages of a mullet is the bigger wheel rolls over objects better than the smaller wheel. The trick to riding a mullet in the rocks is to shift more weight over the front to cut down on the smaller rear wheel getting hung up on squaring edges.

One of main advantages of the 29er wheel is you generally have a greater tire to ground contact patch than the 27.5…. But when the 27.5 is plus size (2.8), I think the 27.5 plus has a better contract patch. The 29er has a long thin contact patch while the 27.5 plus has a wide short patch. When you think about things like this, a 29er should be better at braking and acceleration ( if in the rear) while the 27.5 plus should better at side loads like cornering or riding off camber surfaces. I also think the 27.7 plus is less prone to spin out when on the rear…… handy on a e bike.

I thought it was a mullet already and you put a 29er wheel on the back. I feel like it’s the first mod I would do.

I met up with dude at tranquility lot yesterday, naturally I went over to his set up.
He's from Austin on his way to Rochester to spend the summer with his daughter. Really great dude, gonna hook up with him in a couple weeks.

Had the mullet Kenevo out in ringwood today. Bike is really working well with the fat 27.5 tire in the rear and the 29er in the front. I was cruising in trail mode and the bike was unstoppable in the rock fields. Running the big 27.5 wheel tire combo with the 190mm Zeb is great for rock crawling but the 170mm fork with the 29er completely changed the bike.

so i have seen this mentioned before and probably will again, but since i have both size wheels hanging on my wall i decided to demonstrate the fact that the rolling diameter between 29 and 27.5+ is actually very minimal, i know on my bike which is able to fit both i cannot feel a difference between them. (27.5x2.8 laid on top of 29x2.6, the diameter difference is so minimal as to be unnoticed by the naked eye.

even he circumference is not off by that much (~3.5 inches)
27.5x2.8 at ~88.5inches

29x2.6 at ~91.75

im glad you are happy with the setup and if it works for you it works but the physics of the two are alot less different than some would like to believe.

If im not mistaken a mullet typically refers to a 27.5 in a standard width not a plus tire

yeah but .....pressures...and contact areas and such.

Shameless plug for some e-bikes I have on sale

Pivot shuttle lt ride xl/slx. 7499 —>. $5499. Most sizes still available

Ep801.

Yea, you run lower pressure in 27.5 plus tires so the wheel tire profiles are very different . It’s real easy to take the 2 different wheels and put them next to each other and think they are close to the same but set the pressures and load them with the bike and rider weight and they are very different.

I'll measure up my 26r with 4.8" tires, and see what we get.

that 3/4" radius difference is real!

I don't see the new Orbea Rise on there?
You need to make a move very soon.

It isn't completely clear to me how this will impact us, but my reps are warning that a possible 25% tariff on ebikes is looming

If so, watch for a MAJOR jump in pricing.

Are e-bikes an exception to post-pandemic fallout? Just trying to wrap my mind around a price hike in a slumping industry.
