James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

January 24: Magnets

Every trip we go on, we try to buy a magnet. We’ve done this for years. After a while you start to forget.
I relate to this...Mrs 'rottin and I do this with xmas ornaments for every trip we've been on. Early on in our marriage we had the box of shiny balls from the store plus a couple special ones...now 26ish years later our tree is decorated only with ornaments we have picked up along the way on our adventures...great way to remember and re-live many of our trips...

@Norm do they have poutine on that side of the country?
AFAF

Maybe.

January 27: Sunshine Village

Went to a new ski hill today: Sunshine Village. It’s part of the Ski Big 3; the others being Norquay and the much known Lake Louise. Lots of people there to start the day but the mountain is big enough to spread everyone out.

Snow was good, not great. Call it packed powder that was mostly soft with a few hard patches here and there. Visibility was on & off all day. We almost never ski in good light.

Pretty amazing scenery here. Really great day 1.

So as I'm texting you and asking if your plane went down in a giant ball of fire.... I'll take this as a no...... Very good... Carry on 😂

January 28: Lake Louise

This place is pretty fabulous. After 9+ hours of sleep I was much more ready to go than the day before. While it snowed a little bit today, visibility was much better. The sun even came out once. It was nice. Shadows are so rare here.

Conditions were great even if the snow was heavy. Really solid conditions to practice carving in. Felt great to be out there. Excellent day.

January 29: More Louise

I was going to post an actual picture of Lake Louise and the glacier, but it was so amazing at the top of the hill that I can’t not use this. Holy hell what a majestic day up there today. Visibility was splendid.

We got more poutine. We skied a bunch. We went to see the lake. Then we went out for a great dinner.

Goddamn this was a much-needed break from the shit weather we’re having back home.

January 30: Sunshine at Sunshine

Day 4 and we are back to Sunshine Village. It earned its name today. Conditions were icy to start but once they opened up the upper lifts, the snow was great up top. I probably need a day off but I could spend the rest of the winter doing this. It's a sad reality that we have to leave tomorrow.

I know I have posted the same general picture for the 4th straight day but this is the sort of shit you can't get enough of. Not sure if this will work but you can see a great video from the top on my IG post here.

January 31: Home

And we're back.

Any time you travel, it's nice to come home to your own bed. You have the comfort of your home, the happiness of the dog to see you again, the kids and the normalcy and such. But you're also no longer on vacation. The trek from Banff started around 3:00, when we all seemed to wake up, unable to sleep much more. By 4:30 we were all packed up and out the door. We rolled home at 4:40 pm. Just about 10 hours door-to-door. It's a long day, but it'll be nice to sleep in our own bed tonight.

The trip was fabulous. I loved each of the days, the next one better than the previous. The only things thing that didn't work out for me was my irritated hip/knee/ankle that got slightly more irritated by day. For that reason, I'm ok to wrap it up with 4 days of amazing skiing. Otherwise, I would never want to leave. I love skiing at these massive resorts. It's just fabulous.

We've now been skiing 9 days this year, 8 of which have been in Canada. We can almost say we got our money's worth out of the pass. But we do plan to go 5 more times, hopefully. We'll see how the next 2 months pan out. It's going to be hard to go back to the Poconos this year so it'll likely be Vermont or bust now. And we're only halfway through at this point. So I hope to make some trips up north before the snow is all gone.

Anyway, welcome back to NJ.

February 1: Sciatic Nerve(s)

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that the issue I've been having with my back/hip which has radiated down my leg to the ankle recently is a sciatic nerve issue. Everything I've been experiencing the last few weeks seems to fit that pattern, with the past week seeing an uptick in irritation to it. No surprise, cycling is a known factor of this happening. Some weight lifting as well. Last night, I focused my stretching routine on 6-7 different stretches that help with it, and it's the least it has hurt overnight in the past 5 days. I'm sure skiing did nothing to help.

I'm not married to this self-diagnosis. I plan to see either the doctor or a PT to try and figure this out for sure. But I want to be armed with as much information as I can to help them pinpoint the cause. Basically, this sucks so I need to fix it. It is starting to really negatively impact my life, both awake and asleep now.

Anyway, Julia made cookies tonight. She also found out she got into San Diego State, which is a bit of a plot twist.

I have also self-diagnosed myself with sciatic nerve irritation. For me, if flares big-time after a week of sitting at my desk and cycling is actually one thing that makes it feel better. Tasty-looking cookies BTW and congrats to Julia.

February 2: Clean Days

I was going to call this post "9 days" or "11 days" but I don't know how long it'll be before I'm on the road again. I'm starting this month watching my food intake, being as clean and healthy as I can be. When you vacation, no matter how much you try, it's hard to keep the calorie balance in check. I find that a 5 or 10 day clean binge can really offset any damage I might have done in a short timespan. But you need to be clean, for real. If you track your food intake, it's much easier to eat well. And it's also a good reminder at how quickly & easily the calories add up.

February is going to be a bear of a month. Looking like more than a few meals on the road. A bunch of these day will be in full day client meetings and it's always hard to resist the cookies day after day. They always have cookies. Until then, I'll be trying to eat as many fruits & veggies as I can when it's snack time.

And as much as I'd love to pretend this is the case, potatoes are not a vegetable, no matter how good they taste.

February 3: Mementos

I have mentioned the travel collectibles in another post so I won't lay them out again here. The laptop pretty much gets 3 types of stickers - biking, skiing, and coffee. I added 3 today, which should be fairly easy to figure out. I would prefer these all be small stickers but sometimes you don't have a choice. At this point, I don't think I'd add another big one because it would be necessary to drown one of the smaller ones if I did that. You might be able to squeeze 2 more big ones in there, maybe not. They'd need to be legit to earn a big spot. Like Olympus Mons, something along those lines. SKI THE MONS!

It's a simple thing really, but it makes me happy. I enjoy this collection and I see it more or less every day. I note this isn't a thing for most people. This is a picture of my work computer, which is obviously a temporary home to all of these. When it's life runs out, I'll either peel them off and throw them away, or stick them on a piece of cardboard or who knows what. Maybe I'll list them out and go back to get a new version of each of these. Or I won't.

You could argue that these should be placed on a more permanent spot, though I would say we do have many of these on the box atop the truck. Obviously, the truck gets only bike & ski stickers, no coffee ones, and it has far more than what I have below. While that's slightly more permanent, it's also a sort of temporary home for these. In reality, isn't everything temporary? Even if we stuck them on a wall in the house, some day we will presumably move.

So today was sticker day, which I enjoy because it marks the trip we just took in a slightly more permanent manner.

February 4: Barbecue Sauce

Right before Ted Lasso hits the bullseye on the dart board, he says, "Barbecue sauce." It makes no sense and yet it makes total sense for Ted to say this. Anyone who's watched Ted Lasso knows this scene. And if you're an IG dweller and have watched it, you've seen this scene countless times pop up. It's not only enjoyable, it's a very potent and meaningful message. Very easy to like. This post is really nothing to do with barbecue sauce but it popped into my head when I added the image to the post.

My day started early this morning when I saw that the actor that plays Aaron Burr in the Broadway show Hamilton liked my post on IG from the day we went there. As I said to D, this was by far the most exciting thing that would happen to me today, so I should have just gone back to bed then. In hindsight, I probably should have listened to my own advice.

Today was a totally unmotivated day. I often preach that you can't have great days without having average or bad days. If every day is great, then great is average. In reality, we all have boring days or days where you just have no mojo or whatever. I prefer those to be work days, which is often the case as work frequently drives that lack of mojo. But today was one of those days and it wasn't a work day. I simply had no drive to do much. I felt kind of aimless most of the day.

We did make chicken wings with honey-garlic sauce. And it was every bit as good as this image looks. I still think the Aaron Burr thing was better but I will say we ended things on a pretty good note, as seen below.

My today was also lackluster, and one time Dave Navarro liked a FB post I was in.
Take the average and it’s above average.
Because maths.

Is the day defined by some sort of average? Area under the partial day curve can get rather thin at times

Or is the day defined by the best thing that happened? That mountain of a moment where it takes a bit to return to normal.
