Keep Moving
Last post I mentioned that I'm more active than ever, but now it takes many different forms. Back in the racing days, as mentioned, it was riding a bike. To be fast on a bike, you need to ride a bike. The end. I know there was a lot of debate about this but I always maintained that to be fast on a bike, and only fast on a bike, you needed to ride your bike a lot. And try to be as light as possible. Even when I said this, I knew it wasn't the most balanced approach and that one day, I'd need more balance. Those days have arrived.
So what does "being active" look like? I still ride - MTB, road, Zwift. These will always going to be part of the mix unless something prevents that from happening. I have added more strength training to the mix as well. That comes in 2 forms; lifting weights and physical therapy. I went to the doctor a few months ago with some knee issues, as well as a persistent hip issue. She sent me to PT to try and address them both. It turns out the knees just needed to be strengthened. While it hasn't gone away completely, the knee issues were basically due to not paying enough attention with strength training. She added squats and Romanian deadlifts. The larger issue has been the hip. I now have something like 10 different exercises and stretches to address it. While it's gotten better, I still have some work to do. A lot of it has to do with strengthening my core, another thing that's been neglected for a bunch of years. That's going to be a long process.
I balance the rest of the activity bucket with keeping on top of projects around the house. I know this is sort of normal in a sense, but again, in the past, I've prioritized bike riding over pretty much everything else. The past few months have been any number of fixes, but I've spent a considerable amount of time painting shit. In another few years I'll have gotten to all the rooms in the house. Then I can start at the beginning again. Of course there's always the routine shit like mowing the lawn, building my trails, and so on. While this is all "normal" in life, I've put more of a focus on making sure I keep on top of shit around the house. Keep moving.
I also stretch every night before bed. Almost forgot that one. That's pretty critical in the whole hip/knee/balance equation.
On an unrelated note, I picked up the ski hill sign project again. I guess my mind has started to drift in that direction already.
