James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

We went to flagstaff for a concert and couldn't agree more. The drive up is pretty awesome also. Great to hear about the riding up there also.

I know that sedona is pretty anti ebike but let me know if you have any encounters. When I went it was a bike festival and there were dozens on top of dozens so not a good metric, thanks 🙂

I took this for you today. Don’t be mad I couldn’t help myself. Real talk - I haven’t seen one here yet.

October Pictures #23 - Hiline

A few days ago I posted about Mescal, calling it a trail that sort of typifies why you come here. Those that have been here probably wondered, What about Hiline? Today we hit Hiline. Alex & Mark joined us late last night and today our party train went from 2 to 4 people. I have a bunch of pictures from today but I think this highlights the sort of views (and occasional exposure) you get when you ride here. I think this is also 1 of the trails you should absolutely ride when you come. As you can see, it was an amazing day. Weather was fabulous. The company was fabulous. And loop we did was outstanding. We hit a few new trails this time, and they were solid additions to the loop. It's really hard not to enjoy this stuff.

October Pictures #24 - The Second Half

Today is our 5th day here and 4th day of riding. We did 2 separate rides today so now we've done 5 rides in 4 days. It's at this part of any trip where you start to feel like you're just here as a sort of permanent basis. It's the first day of the second half of the trip. We've been to the food store a bunch of times. We've taken out garbage & recycling. At this point we've also hit 4 different areas of Sedona on the bike. It's all starting to feel normal. Ok, well, the weird space cadet people will never feel normal. But it's at this point of the trip where you think, ok, I could stay here an additional week. Then - just for shits & giggles - you check the prices of real estate. Then you laugh. Anyway, it's really hard not to write about the amazing weather we're having, and how awesome it is. I know my enthusiasm will be ground to pulp in a few days when I get home. But for now, I am enjoying every second of this.

Ideally wood like to be dual dweller.
Right now we are focused on the endless mountains region of PA. But wood also like to have a month or 2 get away in the winter.
Probably find a small place in Pa. and do class C for those get aways, avoiding the winterizing of said class C 😁

October Pictures #25 - Our Travel Buddies

For a few years now, maybe more than a few (what counts as a few?), we've been doing trips with Alex & Mark to various places around the country. This week in Sedona, we've split the place with them. They came in a bit later but they've been here for the bulk of the trip. We were last here in 2020 right before the pandemic. On any trip, we tend to plan the next trip. Right now we're gearing up for ski season. It's a great couple of people to do trips with. We like a lot of the same things. We're the same age. We have kids close enough in age though theirs are a bit older. Food tastes are similar. We have a shit ton of things in common with them. Mark never really smiles in any of the pictures. But he's smiling inside. We end up doing a lot with them every year. I think we did 4 trips to Vermont alone with them in 2023. It's really a great thing to have good friends like this to do stuff with. As usual, this trip has been great. Always looking forward to the next one.

October Pictures #26 - The Last Hurrah

Today was our last hurrah out on the trails. We did another version of the Mescal loop but starting from the bottom this time. Today is the 7th day we've been here and the 6th day we've ridden. In all, we did 6 rides in Sedona and 1 in Flagstaff. It's been a great trip. Like all things, however, it must come to an end. And here we are, Thursday night, at that end. The 2 rental bikes have been returned. Our 2 bikes have been packed up. We're winding out the time now before we have to call it a night and walk out the door one last time. Coming to the end of any great trip is always difficult because you'd love to stay another week. But you also want to sleep in your own bed. And you can't stay on vacation forever. With the end of any trip like this you walk away with great memories and more plans for the future. Until next time, see you on the trails.

Update on the return flight. $0 to go home with the bikes. They survived the week so that’s a bonus.

We just watched out the window of the plane as he loaded the bags onto the conveyor. Didn’t manhandle them at all.

So far it’s been a pretty good decision.

So much nicer to be on your bike than a random unknown rental.

I find rental bikes are always in much nicer shape and make a lot less noise than my bike.
Till you return it right? lol.

I had a sick Yeti rental in Park City but paying 125-150 a day is rough. I didn’t feel bad about beating the shit out of it though.

I think an AIRBNB for renting bikes is a business opportunity. Someone should make an app that lets you rent your bike out.

As long as a black list is put in place it may work
and @JimN would be on it

October Pictures #27 - Back to Reality

Nothing says welcome home like a bunch of dirty dishes the kids left for you. Today was spent traveling from a condo in Sedona to our house in Warren. Everything about the day was smooth, but it was still very long. We woke up at 5am and left the condo a bit after 6, and we just walked in the door at home at 7pm. The only reason it was this early is because the flight landed an hour early. At times we had a 100+ tailwind. It was remarkably quick, all things considered. But now we are back home, back to reality, and back to not on vacation. A good thing here is that we have 2 days to chill out and do nothing - an actual weekend to dial it back from the week away.

October Pictures #28 - The Fall Leaves

The very first thing I noticed this morning is how brilliant it is outside. I won't say the weather in NJ right now is better than where we were a day ago, because it's not. But you'd be fooling yourself if you didn't admit it was a pretty damn fine day today. We met a couple in Sedona that used to live in Phoenix, who have since moved to Rochester, NY. When we asked what they liked better they waited 17 microseconds before firmly saying NY. The whole changing of the seasons is a thing. Right now, it's pretty brilliant out there and anyone who takes a moment to look at the weather knows this is probably going to come to an abrupt end any minute now. So, I spent a significant portion of today outside, as it was a fabulous day to spend a few hours cleaning & reassembling my bike out on the back patio.

October Pictures #29 - The Machine Grows

Among the myriad of things that I got done this weekend, below is the thing that I'm oddly the most excited about. My Robert Axle project thru axle came while we were in Sedona, and I got around to installing it and attaching the bob trailer today. I didn't ride it around at all, so I have no idea how this changes the dynamic of the bike just yet. But this should open up some options in getting the string trimmer out to the top of Puke Hill. I'm not sure this is going to be a reasonable freight train to haul up & over the Cushetunk Saddle, so I may need to find some alternate parking spots for this. I'm cautiously optimistic I can get out there Tuesday afternoon to try it out. But coming off a vacation week tends to press things a bit when it comes to work. Regardless, I expect this battle axe of a contraption to be fully loaded and ready to rock and/or roll soon enough.

There used to be an app/website called Spinlister. Hybrid bikes as far as the eye could see.

October Pictures #30 - Your Narcissistic Narrator

Oh hey. Hi. It's me. With my next-to-last October picture post, I'm turning the narrative to myself a bit. Now ok, yes I'm aware that every one of these posts is about me & the happenings in my life in some way. But as it pertains to how I see all the stuff I'm doing, I would just like to say that I'm enjoying the living shit out of everything right now; or at least trying to. When we were in Sedona that last day, and I was pedaling along a flat section just looking around at some of the shit you see in the picture behind me, I said to myself, simply, "This is fucking awesome. I could do this every day." I appreciate those of you who have followed, starting with the Home September and rolling into the Mobile October. The likes & feedback are always appreciated. I'll probably try to keep something going in some form this fall/winter, though I think I may take a break from the daily posts. In any event, thanks for coming along on the ride with me. Some of you literally rode with me, some of you just rode along with the words. Either way, and I really don't mean this but it's a great book title, so long, and thanks for all the fish.
