James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

The ones that looks like ping pong paddles?
Those are prickly pear.

There are other types, but I think that is the most common.
I remember those well...as I passed by one with the bike i nicked one of the thorns with my ankle, that felt awesome.

Then he threw a bunch of casino chips at me. As we broke for lunch the CEO complimented everyone who gave presentations then called me out as MVP and gave me another $100 chip. In the end I landed a few hundred dollars of chips. That was pretty nice to get the recognition.
So what your saying is that you were the only winner in that whole town.

Ask @merritt about prickly pear...he took bath in them on our last day there a few years ago. FYI lots of youtube videos and solutions to remove the barbs that do not necessarily work.

@Norm I'm glad you finally got a chance to ride in Sedona and see first hand why so many of us who have been there multiple time are like Sedona acolytes.
The realist in Carrol Canyon are fun (Skywalker, Herkenham, Old Post), but they're are even more fun at night. We did a couple night rides when out there (after a day trip up to the GC) and it was a total blast, but by the end of the trip we were complete toast. I mean, we averaged 24 miles a day, with the long day about 32miles. But it is just soooo fun. Super pumped you wrapped up with Javelina, that is a really fun, fast, flow downhill trail.

What were your thoughts on Chuckwagon? For me that is just such an enjoyable trail to ride, in either direction. Pretty long, good flow, tight turns, some step ups, some decent extended climbs.

I went out on those trails before dawn on the Grand Canyon day, and it was dark for the first hour or so. I figured there was zero chance I would do a night ride after we got back. It was definitely a cool experience, and I'm glad I brought my lights and forced myself to wake up and do it.

I am on a plane right now. In a middle seat. I am the meat in a Man Sandwich.

@pooriggy we did not see the Hoover Dam. I like Jim's suggestion and there is always a non-zero chance I come back here for work again. Or maybe I will bring D out. The hotels are actually dirt cheap. You can get them for $40 a night on the strip and that is not one of the disgusting ones. Not top of the line, but you can get average hotels for cheap. It would be a bike & show sort of thing to bring her to. I'm sure I'll be back eventually.

@rottin' I would put Chuckwagon on the list of must-see trails. I think from day 1 that & Mescal were the 2 you had to hit. Axis is probably new to you and it's going to be great in time, but it was fully cut really recently and has some bedding in to do. I can foresee myself doing that again one day for sure.

The conference wrapped up today and as everyone who has been to Vegas knows, the last day is a total waste. Most of the people went out drinking and looked like total & complete shit this morning. I was tired and I still am. But comparatively nothing like them.

Tomorrow is another day. My next work travel looks like Tampa in maybe 2-3 weeks but I think there's a chance that will fail to come together. The customer there is a little scattered and may not be able to turn it around in time. Well, scratch that. My next work travel will be PSEG in Newark again next week.

Oh here's the last post of the Sedona trip, which was the Grand Canyon day trip:

See you guys tomorrow.

Oh hi!

I'm back in America. I guess I've been in America all along but sometimes it feels not like it, especially when you're in Nevada. Does Las Vegas still count as Nevada or has it detached itself yet? In any event, I'm back in America for another week. In exactly a week from now I'll be on my way to Tampa but there's a whole week of stuff between now and then. So much happens every week that next Sunday seems forever away. I'll also be in Newark this week, I think.

Any tips for Tampa?

I wrapped up the Sedona trip today. This is mostly just the flight back so I'm not going to say it's great. It's a link:

With the calf injury that means ski weekends are on hold for now. We were supposed to go to Okemo with @2Julianas & Mark this weekend but that went to shit when I hurt myself. Riding a bike has been ok-to-fine, thankfully for obvious reasons. Walking is mostly ok but even jogging across the street in Vegas to beat traffic was uncomfortable. I picked up some of the CBD oil that @jmanic kept hammering me about and let me say 2 things about this. First, I do not believe most of this bullshit. Second, I really believe this works. Alex brought some with her to Sedona and let me use it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good I felt while there. Then I got back and it seemed to get worse but I didn't really think much of it. Eventually I bowed to the immense pressure and bought some and since I got back from Vegas, I think it actually makes a difference.

So now we're thinking that maybe, in 2 weeks, we might be able to get a last ski weekend in.

That said, I'm really enjoying the stoke of the mountain bike right now. We rode Wawayanda on Saturday and Stephens with the NICA team today. Really good to get out there and I'm happy the weather worked out. Tis the season of garbage trail conditions so it was nice to be able to swing both of these. We have the ability to ride both days next weekend but I am not sure how the weather looks this week. Hoping for the best.

Until then, signing out from America after a great weekend of bikes ands good meals.

Really glad you finally were able to experience the Sedona riding experience. It is quite awesome. Period. I always look forward to my trips out there, and am psyched that next time out there will be some new trails to hit up!

I also succumbed to the CBD campaign (kidding, I am willing to try anything!) last year (summer maybe?) and it did help some of the knee pain that I have been experiencing the last few years, but was not able to overcome some of the structural and scarring challenges that have developed in my knee. Hence under the knife again last week...ugh...

Hope the leg feels better @Norm #makecalvesgreatagain

@Norm im also big into CBD. It does wonders for me. Its not going to "fix" anything but it definitely gets rid of the inflammation and that helps with any pain. Glad you gave it a try.
Just be mindful of the brand you buy some are complete garbage and some I would go as far as to call "medicine"

I lived in Tampa and surrounding areas for about 6 years, but I was on a plane flying somewhere else about 3 days a week, so I don’t have much to recommend. Stay out of Ybor city. Visit Clearwater beach and have a blackened grouper sandwich at Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill. Have a walk on the beach at Honeymoon Island and say hi from me to the little turtles (probably the wrong season anyway).

I don't want to derail the coronavirus thread, but someone saw this on Twitter and posted it in our #random Slack channel this morning, and it made me lol:

Java is to JavaScript as Corona is to Coronavirus

+1 for grouper at frenchy's.

Bike across the Courtney Campbell Causeway, then up through Safety Harbor.
(even better, go grab my SS hipster bike and ride it back from FLA - it is in clearwater.)
Check my rides in Jan/Feb of 2017
Visit @Pearl's sister (?)

There is a BMX track in Oldsmar - it may still be closed.

Pinellas trail starting north of lake tarpon. this is mostly bike path

+2 for Frenchy's in Clearwater... I got nothing else useful to add, as the rest of my time there was spent drinking

Norm-Headed to Wayway today for some TM with the hand saw. Did you see any trees down? If so, where?

Yes I did. We rode The Wall, Mojo Swamp, Hemlock & Load, Porcupine, and Rockedendrum. I'm pretty sure it was Hemlock & Load where we saw the tree down. If not that, then Mojo Swamp.

OK. Thanks. I may not get that far out today on foot. Battling a cold, otherwise a perfect day for riding. I will put that tree on the list. Maybe later this week or next week.

Ok you can all rest easy. I will not be getting the Cornoavirus on the Tampa trip. This is primarily due to the fact that the customer has cancelled all non-business critical travel. So while I can still go to Tampa, they cannot get me into the building. As such, I will be here next week. I have noted the Frenchy's thing on my travel map as I may very well end up going there in April, or at some point in the future. But it won't be in March.

On the bright side I get to go to Newark 3 of the next 4 weeks. I mean just 1 day a week but YAY NEWARK! On the bright side of the bright side, Newark is probably too toxic for the Coronavirus to survive. I mean are we allowed to joke about this yet?

The only thing I'm actually disappointed in is the Dali Museum, which was 30 minutes from where we were going to be. Was going to try to hit that while there. Oh well. I'll survive.

I'm going to skip the political & social mental masturbation about this Coronavirus thing but there are definitely some dark avenues this could go down. Economically this is going to be a total disaster soon.

I do not have any travel blog posts today. I know, the sads.

We did a gravel ride tonight with @Glenn Rides After 4 PM CST. It was really warm and it would have made some sense to get out this afternoon but ha-ha to that. Just wasn't to be and that's fine. We ended up with 1.5 hours I guess. I actually don't even know.

Alright. I don't have much else. Weather looks like creamed crap for mountain biking this coming weekend.

Team MTBNJ is doing a gravel ride on the Columbia trail with team HB. Join in the fun, don't cost nothin.
